Tasteless Jokes About the News

And when I say tasteless, I mean tasteless. You've been warned.

On Friday I had a great time with friends playing all the games from the old TV show Good News Week (sometimes known as What About the Buzzcocks?). They used to play a game called 7 Days in 7 Seconds in which players were shown pictures from news stories of the past 7 days and had to guess what the stories were. Then the host would give a monologue about them. This is the monologue I wrote:

They also used to play a game called Warren where players were given a set of 3 statements about one person who'd been in the news, but their name was concealed by the name Warren. Players had to guess warren's real name. I wrote a monologue for this game about our Foreign Minister Alexander Downer and cricketer/adulterer Shane Warne.

Doing these monologues made me realise that part of the reason I feel like Australia has become so conservative is that all my favourite comedians that used to stick it to the Government, all the ones that used to make jokes that didn't care about Right wing concepts of political correctness are no longer making comedy that way. McDermott's GUD is more like the comedy of a nasty schoolyard bully than a witty political comment. Denton is making an excellent but serious interview programme. The CNNNN Boys are on radio and so the quality has dropped in favour of quantity. Rove is bland. Glasshouse is less intelligent. Martin/Molloy have disapeared. etc etc. Where have all the comedians gone?

just a small note for you, mick molloy can be heard on MMM between 12 and 1pm weekdays. as a slightly smaller note he was the only person to have Latham on after his tantrums were put on public record and to give them, and him, a good review.
