New Orleans police beat man, intimidate reporter

I won't try to score easy humor points by saying the police were beating the wrong black man.... (apparently Nagin wasn't in the wrong place at the right time).

They were however incredibly guilty of beating a black man who was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Worse for the police is that a reporter was in the wrong place at the right time and caught the incident on camera and went to intervene and was themselves then a target of the police.

I know that the police in New Orleans have to be running on fumes in many ways. They are under staffed, and over-worked in trying to help their community recover from the results of Katrina and Rita, but there's absolutely no excuse for behavior that was seen in the video clips I saw.

The link here shows some stills of the incident and the results of the beating that the poor victim took. Considering he was supposedly only guilty of public intoxication, I expect he'll be receiving some compensation from the New Orleans police department's deep pockets at some time in the future. Perhaps enough to keep his intoxication levels set well into the future.

Stupid cops. Just stupid.

I guess the god thing out of this to me, is that the reporter stepped out of his box of reporting and tried to step in and put an end to it. That is really awesome to me.

Great point.

So often reporters seem to be stuck following some twisted ethics code that tells them not to become the story or part of the story, and instead of helping they simply sit and watch the happenings around them.

As you said, it's great that at least once the reporter remembered to be a human first, and a reporter second, and tried to help stop the insanity.

Morning news today (several sources) has reports that the victim in this case claims not to have been drunk at all (claiming not to have had a drink in approximately 25 years) and left wondering just exactly what he did that earned him the beating.

For the record, I'm fairly sure no one "earns" a beating like the one shown in the pictures and video.

I hope the real story is discovered in this case and if the cops are guilty of abusing this individuals civil rights, I hope they pay the penalty all the way around.
