Men marginalized by technology, Women and insta-pregnancy

No wonder so many men seem to be having a hard time finding themselves mates. Technology has taken the old biological-clock out of the equation, and now women are increasingly finding that they don't need a man at all to enjoy family life (or at least single-parent motherhood).

What does this hold for the future of the species? Are more sex crimes in store as men find that they aren't able to find willing sexual partners as they mature? Will the numbers of "working women" (prostitutes) increase to fill the void? Or will the same working women just find their business increasing exponentially?

Again, I'm reminded of bad B movies. In this case, I'm thinking a bit of the old cult classic "A Boy and his dog". If you haven't seen it, well, you probably won't get the reference, but it seems right in line with the following news article, or at least with the future that is now coming true.

Women bypass sex in favour of 'instant pregnancies'

By Charlotte Edwardes and Andrew Alderson

Women are increasingly seeking inappropriate IVF treatment because they do not have the time or inclination for a sex life and want to "diarise" their busy lives.
Wealthy career women in their 30s and early 40s, some of whom have given up regular sex altogether, are turning to "medicalised conception" - despite being fertile and long before they have exhausted the possibility of a natural conception.
They are prepared to pay thousands of pounds for private IVF treatments - even though they have unpleasant and potentially harmful side effects - because they believe it offers them the best chance of "instant" pregnancy.
Many fertility experts believe that IVF offers women the best chance of pregnancy - a one in three chance of success or better in one cycle if the woman is under 35, whereas natural conception has no better than a one in four chance for a woman of the same age even if a couple have an active sex life.
An active sex life aimed at pregnancy is considered to be unprotected sex at least once every three days.
Each year about 43,000 women receive IVF treatment, most of them privately. The cost of a single treatment - and often several are needed - is at least £2,500.

How about men maturing so that women who are able to take care of themselves look at them and say, "hey, I wouldn't mind sharing my life with you" rather than thinking, "Gee, a black lab in perpetual puppyhood would be less work."

I don't think it is hard for a man to find a mate. If he is looking for a woman to cook, clean for him and agree with everything he says, then that is a different story.

There are a lot of great men out there. Lots of great women, too. Why do they have a hard time finding each other? No clue.

You know, I was actually just thinking that the article on France paying women to have more children might work in conjuction with this article, except that I think the French women might not want to pursue the scientific methods since it would eat up the money that France would be paying them (at least for a few months) if they sought IVF.

In answer to momijiki's reply, I hope you read the entire original article, as it discusses the increasing numbers of women that are deciding that having sex 2 to 3 times a week in order to have a child is just too much.

What is going on with those women that makes the thought of having sex such a bad thing?

Yes, there are eligible women and eligible men that are having a hard time finding each other, but then again there are literally hundreds (if not thousands) of match making services, including internet dating agencies, and many other ways of showing interest in seeking companionship. It seems that many women are just taking the attitude that they don't want companionship, and instead just want children without the life partner.

At the site of the original article, there's another archived article on the issue of whether or not IVF should be used for fatherless pregnancies, again, well worth the read.

Ok. Read the link.

And I take issue with a one thing here. The article also referred to couples, not just women. So what is wrong with these men that they are just penciling in sex?

Your previous scenarios, while interesting, don't really line up with the article after I read it.

Still haven't read the one about fatherless pregnancies with IVF, but the method is a moot point since a woman can go to a sperm bank and get some fertiliser or if has a generous male friend, a simple turkey baster.

Why would women choose to have fatherless pregnancies? See above response. It might also have to do with their background and feeling betrayed by the man in their life. While I know that women cheat too, it seems that the male cheating has screwed up more family lives. However, that is not supported by stats, simply by collection of anecdotes from people I know.

I think your secnario would line up with something like Frank Herbert's
"The White Plague" more effectively. Written over 20 years ago, that is one scary book. Basically, a scientist loses his wife to a tragic terrorist bombing and he takes revenge on the world by creating a virus that kills women. Of course, book is more complicated that that short scenario.
