the PRT SCRN (print screen) button at the top right on your keyboard. Hit it and then open paint and got to edit. Then just hit paste and there it is!!

Then what's the best (and free) screenshot program, that also captures the mouse pointer?

You can get the cursor to show if you use cursor XP. Sorry I don't know about any progs that will capture the regular cursor. Cursor XP can be found here. https://www.wincustomize.com/software.aspx

What's it like to use an ordinary cursor? Not seen one of those for years

I use the print screen key and I also have the program called " Hoversnap "

Just type hoversnap in search..pretty easy to find. not sure about cursor part but I know that(some) print screen keys don't show widgets and a few other things on screen so you need a capture program.

There's a 'capture' docklet for ObjectDock that works pretty well.

Sorry I don't know about any progs that will capture the regular cursor.

Only think the Print Screen button doesn't capture is active movies playing in any media player. As to the rest SnagIt is good, as well as Hoversnap, already suggested both.
