My friend E. and I argue very frequently about everything, partly because we both believe to be erudite and also because the both of us are sure to know more than the other... Talking about the infamous murder of Marie Trintignant by her boyfriend, Bertrand Cantat who is also the lead singer of the French biggest rock band, Noir Desir, we began this classic discussion about art: can you respect an art creation if the artist behave in a horrible way.
In short, does art have to be moral?
My point was the author and its work are different thing and consequently you can't judge one using the other and still I loved Noir Desir music. Of course, E.'s opinion was the opposite, for him, any people perpetrating blood crime or any horrible should be disregard as an artist, and he didn't want to hear them again. The argument tone was raising, and I started to enumerate few examples about artist/criminals:
The French writer Celine who write journey to the end of the night and was also a infamous anti-Semitism during WW2
James Brown, Snoop Doggy Dog and a lot of other artist went to jail for violent act
and of course Hitler, who I though was a painter in his young year , but E. exclaim "But Hitler was a wall painter!". As I had never saw any paintings from him, I suspect it might be an hoax and so I reckon my ignorance but maintain my first opinion. E. went back to his room furious after my stubbiness.
I have just checked on Google and actually young Hitler tried to enter the beau art in Viennes. So we can deduce that he was leaning toward painting. As I suspect the few links i read of revisionism, I exclude them from my post but still I was right.
Back to the central point of the discussion, does art have to be moral?
