Viva Mexico! ...or in English Speak, Long Live Mexico!

Today is Mexico's Independence Day. On September 16, 1810, Father Miguel Hidalgo feverishly rung the churchbells of the town of Dolores to signal a rebellion against the Spanish colonial crown. This marked the beginning of Mexico's Independence movement.
Although I was not born in Mexico, my roots are there. My grandfather was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and my grandmother's family is from there as well. I was almost moved to tears when I walked into my school this morning and heard the song !Viva Mexico! from singer Luis MIguel. Since we are a border town (a hop, skip, and a jump away from Mexico), many schools around here celebrate this day. Students come dressed in authentic Mexican costumes and participate in a parade and celebration assembly. It is a wonderful thing to see and hear: red, green, and white patriotic colors everywhere, and shouts and songs of pride
Sometimes I get so caught up with the American way of living that I sometimes feel that I neglect my roots. This is the type of day that reminds me that Mexico is not all about good food and the Spanish language. It is nation that , although lacks the financial prosperity we do, is full of sincere pride and spirit. And I definitely share that pride and spirit with them.
