R.David Paulison is the man tipped to replace Mike Brown as the head of FEMA.

Paulison is probably best remembered as telling Americans (along with Homeland Security Tom Ridge) that their "survival" kt should include plastic sheeting and duct tape.

He's a career firefighter - definitely a step-up from a horse judge, and he's head of FEMA's emergency preparedness division, so he knows the in's and out's of the agency.

Hopefully he'll do a beter job than "Brownie". 

I wonder what "Bushie" is going to call him - "Tapie"?

Why? Mine does. You can do anything with 100 mph tape and 550 cord. Hell, add a paperclip and you can be McGuyver.

Aaaaaaaack! That's what I was gonna say he should call him. McGuyver. ... had a poster of him up in my room as a teenager (Richard Dean Anderson, not Paulison...rofl). It was stuck to the wall with... what else? Silver duct tape.

i've frequently advocated webbing the west coast with duct tape as a kinda 'starwars smi meets ratpaper'.

I kept a boat from sinking by repairing the hull with duct tape, all while on the water. That stuff should not only be part of a survival kit, but should be carried around at all times, just in case.

Know where hundred mph tape got it's name? They used to use it to patch bullet holes in helicopter rotors in Nam. Crazy, huh?

Duct tape = you can fix damn near anything that's broken.

Anything that moves and is not supposed to.  For that which does not move and is supposed to, use wd40.

The problem with the duct tape thing was how it was delivered... It was made to sound like using the two, you would save the lives of you and loved ones from a biological attack. Panic ensued and people went a little stupid in a rush to get the items. It was down-right comical how it was presented and how people took it. In the event of a biological attack, that shit won't do anything for you. At best you can suffocate yourself before the germs get you

And the MacGuyver kit would be:
-Duct Tape
-Swiss Army Knife
-Paper Clip
-Twine

Using those four items and any common household good on hand you can fashion:
-A rube goldberg device to fetch a door key from across the room while tied to a chair
-Fashion a small nuclear device
-Build a water filtration system capable of supplying clean water to 10,000 starving africans
-Defeat the evil, villianous Murdock

I'm not saying that it's not a good thing to have around because it is, I'm just saying that the new head of FEMA is the dude who told us all to get duct tape and caused a panic where stores sold out of the darn stuff.

Sounds like a good start for any emergency kit to me. Get warm and dry and start fixing crap. At least you'll have something to do

I have a rolls at home, in the car, and in our camping kit too.

EXACTLY!!!!  Thay made it sound like this stuff was CRUCIAL to survival and that if you didn't have it....well, the consequences didn't bear thinking about.

My son used silver duck tape to hold up the window on the drivers' side of the car.
