SEGA and Petroglyph have announced a partnership to create a new military/sci-fi franchise, "new" being a risky venture in today's market. Petroglyph, who is already working on Star Wars: Empires at War, is full of ex-Westwood talent, the team behind RTS juggernauts Dune II and the Command & Conquer series. Petroglyph's first game from the franchise will be an RTS with SEGA taking control of marketing and distribution.
Although Petroglyph has yet to even ship a game, the partnership by SEGA and their roots certainly boasts well for the upcoming titles. No other information has been released but the talk of a franchise rising from the partnership certainly makes the upcoming release seem far off and that the companies have high hopes.
"SEGA is moving aggressively toward a leadership position in the RTS category and the team at Petroglyph is behind some of the finest games in the genre," said Simon Jeffery, President and COO, SEGA of America. "We continue to rebuild SEGA as a leading publisher by collaborating with only the very best developers in North America and Europe."
"Coincidentally, this deal marks the ten year anniversary of the blockbuster RTS series which most of the Petroglyph team worked on during our time at Westwood Studios," said Michael Legg , President of Petroglyph. "We are extremely excited about our partnership with SEGA, as it will enable us to advance the RTS genre while creating fun and exciting experiences for gamers worldwide."
The deal also marks SEGA's sixth move on the western market, following the acquisition of The Creative Assembly and deals with Silicon Knights, Secret Level, Monolith Productions and Pseudo Interactive. SEGA is definitely keeping focus on the western game market.
