Shocking details are about to emerge from the Katrina Catastrophe. Faked-up emergency plans, buses which could have taken many to safety, money which was supposed to strengthen and build levees being diverted to build riverboat casinos and New Orleans cops abandoning their posts. Nothing turns out to be more folly than when people put their faith in government, whether it is local, state, or federal.
The broken levees brought a humanitarian crisis not seen in our country in modern times. The levees were owned and maintained by the Army Corps of Engineers. They knew they would fail at some point during a major hurricane. They would have been built far better and stronger by any large private engineering company.
The middle-class and other working people had left New Orleans by the time the storm hit. These people all had jobs in the private sector and possessed automobiles. The next day at the Superdome were found members of a mostly black underclass with no resources of their own. These people for at least the last two generations have come to expect someone else to provide for them. How did the socialistic transportation system work for them? It failed them miserably.
Being self-sufficient has great survival value. Several generations of the welfare state can breed self-sufficiency out of a people. Just look at the fate of those who trusted government to provide.
