Known Bugs, Issues, suggestions, etc

This is a copy of my current list. Some of the stuff on here dates back to March and I haven't checked to see if some of the older ones are still reproducible. There are also some removed that I've fixed since the build. If Brad thinks it's a good idea, I might be able to set up something a bit more useable next week.

-wormhole anomaly generally doesn't take you very far away
-animations are interrupted by anything that causes the screen to repaint (like hitting the turn button)
-takes too long to start up gal civ.
-it is possible to have 2 stars with the same name
-encountering a previously unknown star should set relations (currently only works if the star has ships in orbit)
-cursor flickers in the race setup screen fields
-entering a long star name can cause the game to crash
-star name shows up on sector map before the planet is colonized, as soon as the colony ship enters the system
-left mouse dragging to scroll can interfere with regular scrolling
-alien ships that come from an anomaly are still named "USS Fortune"
-ships on manual control sometimes start going the wrong way
-music options don't work
-system list should open with name star dialog
-bink movies are problematic on some systems.
-most of the ships in a group of selected ship wait until the end of the turn to move
-dialup connection is initiated when playing galciv (Someone with dialup please tell me if this still happens)
-messages purportedly from the terrans pop up declaring war on the terrans (haven't seen this for awhile)
-tradescreen should return a smartass response instead of "Great" when no exchange has been made.
-sound is lost, followed by a crash
-the number 4 is too big on the planet list for the planet class field.
-race that's not dead disappeared from Foreign Policy screen
-StarHawk ship def needs to have the range value added.
-Strings that are too long for fields get cut off
-ship and planet lists need to be re-designed for greater usability. Scroll buttons are too slow
-ships with moves after leaving auto-pilot lose their remaining moves.
-check into reports of autopilot problems, particularly without autoturn on.
-no way to attack with ships in orbit if star is surrounded
-camera moves too late to watch ships being destroyed
-selected ship should be marked on minimap.
-need to be able to see what destination cursor goes with which ship.
-3rd mouse button/mousewheel messages need to be supported
-cancel mouse click needs to be added
-event list entries need a border
-not all techs have a corresponding icon on the research list.

suggestions:

-need to allow redistribution of population within a system
-allow user to set how many turns before autosave
-list of names to be assigned to ships as they are built
-option to turn on/off colonization from within a system
-planet list modes for discovered but uncolonized planets, and alien colonies.
-research progress should be shown somewhere on the main screen
-allow sorting of the research list by amount of time it takes to research a tech

"-ships with moves after leaving auto-pilot lose their remaining moves."

Cari,

I have not seen this for many builds now. I thought it had been fixed in one of the later alphas.

Cheers,
Jack

Cari,
what about CRC checking on downloads? Does this need to be added or is it already present?

Paul.

Good point fixing.
It should be taken for any additional bug report/confirmation.

"dialup connection is initiated when playing galciv"

I think I might have run across it last night. I have XP installed, and I generally disable the dial up prompt as soon as I get it the first time after rebooting. As I dont usually reboot that often, I have not really paid much attention to it, however, on this occasion I was prompted just after loading GalCiv.

I'll do some more checking to confirm it on my side (I have a few programs that might also be causing this), but it would be good to hear if anyone else is being prompted.

'-sound is lost, followed by a crash'

I've never had GalCiv crash this way, but the sound does usually go out after five hours or so.

And forcing the scroll arrow to always be present on the Social Improvements list would be helpful, as I've had the window stuck with nothing present because only three items were available in the list, but the list window was down where the 12th item would have been because of the previous planet's list.

"-ships with moves after leaving auto-pilot lose their remaining moves." was reported again in beta 1y.

I didn't put any bugs regarding the dgm on the list because they're separate issues from Gal Civ.

"dialup connection is initiated when playing galciv" Thanks. This is harder for us to debug since none of us are on dial-up. I'll have to give it a try as soon as they activate my phone line.

Ugh..that's bad. The reason that the arrows don't stay is to indicate if you can scroll or not. So it's still not refreshing the project lists correctly when you switch planets? Are you using the the arrows at the bottom of the screen or clicking on the entries in the planet list to switch between planets, or does it happen either way?

The lists refresh, but the list window's position remains where it was, and if the list has less than a full window's worth of items, the arrows disappear, even if some (all) of those items are not currently visible.

I know with certainty that it occurs when going through the news events, and it seems to occur when using the arrows on the planet screen or using the system view in the main window.

I haven't tried using the planet list, but I'd imagine that it's behaivor would match that of the system view.
