Some people disgust me

New Orleans is trying to regroup after Hurricane Katrina ravaged it.

Most people are having to come to terms with having lost everything they own.

Some people, though...are making the most of the devastation and are looting stores.

From food to jewellery, jeans to TV's, if it aint nailed down folks are taking it.

Yes, Katrina has hardly passed but these scum are out on the streets already, taking things that isn't theirs and that they have no entitlement or claim to.

I'm disgusted.  Truly disgusted.

If I were a store owner, I'd be wading down to my place with a 12 gauge and a couple of boxes of shells.

*rant over*

Makes you wonder what the looters are thinking anyway.  The stuff is probably ruined.  They are just stupid jerks.

They are just stupid jerks.

I had a different term in mind, but stupid jerks works too.

Makes you wonder what the looters are thinking anyway.

I think that it's the selfish 'me me me me me' entitlement mentality that's in their heads when they're doing this stuff.

Yea, I know.  SO they will risk being shot for something that is ruined and probably worthless anyway.  There are those people unfortunately.

There's a big difference between taking food and taking jewelry, though.

If all my groceries were under 10 feet of water and there was a loaf of bread at a store that survived, you better believe I'd nick it in a second. Stealing food is survival.

I'll agree with you that looting jewelry and other non-necessities is disgusting. But you mentioned food, and I can't place sustenance in the same category with consumer garbage.

P.S. New Orleans is my second home and the people of that city are usually a wonderful lot. They've helped me out when I've been down on my luck more times than I could tell you.

Pathetic. An attempt to "get back at society"?? People who think the world (and the people in it) "owes" them really irritate me.

And for the record, I never thought of New Orleans as a "sophisticated" city, myself. .

The Big Easy is the best city because of the name it earned.

I'll agree with you there. Food is one thing. Alcohol, clothing, jewellry are another.

Yeah, me too. They seem to think that all of us who busted our butts to get the little that we've got owe them something because we're better off than they are. They want what we have, but they don't think they should work for it. So, they steal. Or they loot. Either way, they're getting what they think they're 'owed'.

Meh. Not saying the looting is right, but I'll bet most store owners are insured, and I doubt many of them planned to have a store, or even come back.

My sister lived near the levy, and she packed what she could in one truck and left without ever really expecting to return. Looters suck, but if and when the owners return, missing merchandise is going to be the least of their problems.

Destroyed buildings, basic utilities, renovating, not having workers.....or customers, economy in the toilet. Hell it may be months before they're even able to get back, much less start picking up the pieces. Most of the people I talked to intend to take the insurance and start a new life somewhere else.

If I were the governor, I'd issue "shoot on sight" orders for looters. Fuck 'em.

Harsh, but sometimes necessary.

That is beneath you.  really.  Sure they may be insured, but they may not be either.  That is no excuse ever, just class warfare.  Sorry if this is harsh, but it is never right.

That doesn't excuse what a looter does, which is basically kicking a person when they're down. And just because a business is insured doesn't mean there are no costs involved when what's left is looted, those insurance prices rise for everyone who later builds in that area.

Jinx.

No, no.....don't get me wrong, if I were making a list of people who's ass I would like to kick if they randomly pass me in the street, they would be up near the top. Still beneath Gilbert Godfried, but near the top.

My idea of law enforcement is a little more advanced than old English law, when you could be hung for stealing a loaf of bread, but just barely. By all means shoot what looters (of non-essentials only, please) that you can.

I'm just saying that to store owners, after everything else, looting costs are going to be a relatively small cost in comparison to the other damages they've already suffered.

looters? you mean self-expressioners right?

Evacuating when you're told to is survival.

Dude, not everybody can hop in the car and go.

Taking food is quite a different matter than stealing beer or a television. If I got folks to feed and no food, there's lots of things I'll do.

I heard an interview today with a looter -- she had a few cans of tuna fish and a couple of loaves of bread. She was in tears, saying how she had always looked at people looting on television and thought how horrible they were but then she found herself in a situation where her kids were hungry. She wasn't out scoping a new rolex or a DVD player.

Are there those people? Sure, and they're horrid. How hungry would YOU have to get before stealing a loaf of insured bread (that will go bad and not be sold anyway) looks pretty good to you?

I saw video of looters at a walmart today.  They had TV's, clothes, shoes, stereos....some of them bragged to the camera about how they got all this stuff.  THAT'S not stuff that necessary for survival, that's just straight up greed.

There was even a black female cop in there, in uniform....pilfering shoes and clothes and mp3 players.  She said she was "doing her job".  Sure.

Emphasis on the 'crime' part.

they're healthy young men and women taking cold advantage of a tragic situation, and yes, I think they should be shot on sight.

Me too.

So what?  If it were MY store, I'd be furious.  it's bad enough getting shit detroyed by a hurricane without ignorant mofo's taking shit that aint theirs.  That's like kicking someone when they're down.

They're bold too; they're on film talking about all the stuff they got.  I hope that comes back to bite them in the ass.

Like I said, if I owned any property down there I'd be sitting at the doors with a loaded pump action and a big stock of shells.

I heard on the Radio where one was running out with 3 jugs of Laundry Detergent (No Electricty, what is she going to wash?) and another who was walking down the aisle checking the labels of stuff!

No, these people aren't pilfering to survive.

No, they're not.  They're pilfering because it's 'free' stuff to them.
