Prolific articles=less comments

Gee, you're welcome Alison! Even though I don't always comment I do always read! Sometimes I have nothing to say that would really mean anything. Yes, I think people shy away from long blogs, and yes, I've written a few of those! I think that people haxe X amount of time and patience so ya gotta grab 'em quick! Also, I've noticed a few bloggers that no matter how much you comment on their blogs, they will not tit-for-tat and comment on yours. I wonder about that little phenomenon too.

Yes, I think it's a challenge to write a story or an article and keep it short and to the point. I think that's what hooks people. And brevity, as they say, is the soul of wit...

I think that is the key to a good blog...if you look at the top 10 sites, most of the articles are short, and to the point. Maybe that is the JU secret...hmmm now maybe I can bust into the top 20 (I think I'm right behind you in the rankings).

I think you've hit the nail on the head. Short and sweet does it. In my short time here at JU, I've noticed the same thing. My longer articles receive little more than a passing glance. I think Shovel's right... time is a limited commodity.

That said, I've read a couple of your longer entries and did enjoy them. I like your writing style. Sorry I haven't commented more often.

Alison: You're generally one of the bloggers that I will read regardless of the topic or title of the article. Some days I'm on a lot and some days little to none, so I miss a lot of stuff.

That said, I prefer to read stuff that prompts me to respond. I think that's the key to JU success, really. We all just want to talk about ourselves and our experiences, self-absorbed people that we are, hehe. So when someone writes an article that makes it easy for us to talk about ourselves in our reply, we jump on it. Or if it pisses us off...that works, too.

More literary stuff tends to not do as well on the forums. I think length is one issue (I won't read long magazine articles, hahaha), and another issue with literary type posts is that it doesn't really solicit anything from the reader. If all someone can say is, "Wow. This is well written", they're probably not going to bother commenting.

Just my thoughts.

I would have to agree...with the lengthy articles people ar less likely to comment for your reasons listed.

Good points, there are so many bloggers on here, and I think most people on here deserve the right attention, as oppose to reading just one lengthy article or several in depth blogs.

I swear I did not write this as a pitty party, or to points whore....I was just wondering how others felt on the subject.

Alison, just so you know I did read all your 'Summer' articles and I found them all interesting, funny and well written.

Most of the time I rarely get to be here during the day and at night I share the computer with my gf. She uses it alot for her job but I do get to browse off and on like for 15 minute intervals every hour or so. So sometimes if it's too long to read I will wait until late at night when I have the computer more to myself.

I should have commented on some of yours since I did read and enjoy them. I can be slow though. There's blogs I have been wanting to write and I still have only written one.

I know we all want people to read our writings but at the same time you shouldn't let it effect the way you wrote your 'summer' articles. They, to me, were not long at all. I have read long ones before and will continue to do so and why, because I read for the content not because it's short or long. And they are some very good writers here no matter the length of their articles.

So keep writing and I'll keep reading. And maybe if my laziness subsides I might even comment, too.

Well, my attention span is pretty short, so unless it really interests me I might just glance over it. But yes, if it is too long, a lot of people won't read it in it's entirety, and I don't like to reply unless I read the whole thing. Although one of my top articles (23 comments) was 3600+ words, so there are exceptions, but usually only if you can provoke a bit of debate, cause that is usually what keeps them going forever while you watch the points rack up.

I hope that barely coherent braindropping made sense.

It made plenty of sense. I think it's the reason so many people read Dr. Guy, Myrrander, and so on...because they always have something heated to say about world issues.

Actually you are one of the bloggers I browse for when I am on JU...I've been busy with work lately, and have only commented on only a few blogs this past week...I actually saw your 90s articles and told myself I'd have to read some of em when I got the chance (My high school and college years were in the 90s so it seemed like they'd be interesting to read).

So, maybe lengthy articles aren't the only reason for lack of comments...some people, like me, have some catching up to do.
