Just like men with cute dogs, men with babies attract women.  So, the only reason not to have hubby carry the baby is to keep the women away.

Janders, my daughter was colicky for the first 6 month, so I carried her everywhere.  I'm not sure what I would have done without the baby slings.  Plus, you always know where the baby is LOL

My youngest was extremely happy in the sling for his first 4 months. It made things a lot easier for me too. I was able to get sooo much more done and the slings are so much easier to get them in and out of than those baby carriers. Once they are bigger, I highly recommend a good backpack. Don't know what I would have done without my sling and backpack!

I never used a sling, but my husband loved the little baby pouch that you strap on so that the baby is up against your chest. He felt like it helped him bond with the baby, and he thought it was really cool that he could do dishes and hold the baby at the same time, hehe.

Heh, I thought it was cool that the dishes were getting done AND I wasn't holding a crying baby. I breastfed my youngest, so I had PLENTY of snuggle time, and was happy to hand the baby over, hehe.

Adrian really liked it, though. He thought it was pretty novel that he could do things while still holding the baby. And he's always been one to be involved and help out with the kids and the house.

Traditional wisdom says you shouldn't carry a child constantly

I can't speak for Janders, but I assume she is referring to the times that the baby is in the "not ready for a nap and not quite ready to be fed but crankier than hell" times that she is carrying her around.

They also come in handy when you have to do chores and can't keep running back and forth to make sure the baby is OK.

With my daughter, she was colicky.  There was no "separation" time unless the entire neighborhood wanted to listen to a screaming baby from 4pm to 4am.  Ahhh.....I don't miss those days.

Actually as Jayna's Grandma I wear her as well when she is fussy. After having three children of my own and doing daycare for 18 years I always used something to wear or carry the children in often up to 18 months. All of them ended up being very friendly and outgoing.

BTW I get a chance to brag a bit here... Jayna's mom and dad are the most natural, relaxed newbie parents I have ever seen. Jayna is also the most happy, relaxed little girl. When she does her nightly fussing they seem to know just the right thing to do for her and in no time she is either sound asleep or back to being happy. It is so sweet.

LW, you are entitled to your opinion, but I have to disagree. I really believe strongly in attachment parenting.(AP) AP advises wearing your baby. Jayna gets worn by more people then just me. My hubby, mom and sister often wear her. She is a very content girl. Babies learn positive things by there caregivers always being there for them. I think the only thing a baby learns by self soothing is that there isn't someonethere to take care of them, that the world has let them down.

I think my job as Jayna's mom, is to provide love. What a wonderful way to show her love by being there for her whenever I am needed. As children grow they naturally will start to venture out on there own, and not need to be next to someone they know. I don;t have a problem with Jayna only wanting familar people.

Everyone parents differently, and this is what works for us.

Yes everyone parents differently and that's what's great about being parents. You don't have to follow the norm.

I've seen both sides of the coin with friends and their kids and with my own.

I personally loved the baby carriers and had one for each child. It was pretty convenient and living in NY at the time I was free to take the subway and buses without a problem or lugging around the stroller or carrier.

I found that when I baby the kids, it showed love and comfort and they never forgot that (and we still hug and kiss) but I had to also make sure that they knew how to be independent as well and in doing so they could sit quietly and play and develop their own personality and have fun with other children.

And there are times when you will want to be on your own and find time for you believe me!

It's great that your daughter has all those people are around her. In that she is lucky!
