If you could, would you?

Take this little pill and you'll be all set....

With the recent news about Rafael Palmiero's steroid usage, and the news over the last 24 - 48 hours of Andy Van Slyke (former team mate of Barry Bonds) saying it was his opinion that Bonds has done steroids, and Van Slyke would have done them if he had known where to get them from (statements made on the Steven A. Smith screamfest "Quite Frankly" on ESPN), there's a great couple of questions for everyone to comment upon and answer as truthfully as possible.

Lets see if I can write the questions up in a way that will get to the truth and not leave everyone confused.

Here goes: If you could take a pill that would make you better at whatever you do, would you? No matter what you do, whatever the profession, or chosen path, if there was a "magic bullet" that you could take that would give you an edge, or elevate you to the next highest level, would you use it?

I'm sure some will ask 'would there be side effects?' Lets take the same approach as we know regarding steroids currently. There's much evidence that the magic pills you could take may have long term effects, but there is no concrete proof that the effects are guaranteed or that they are permanent. There may be temporary side effects, may be long term side effects, or may be no side effects at all.

There's also probably going to be questions about 'would the pill be legal?' Lets put it in the same category as steroids. Not legal, but stuck in a big grayish area like steroids are. Does legality of the pill even matter to you?

The question is, if you are being honest with yourself and with the rest of us, would you 'cheat' to get ahead? If you knew that many others were cheating and you were being left behind on raises/promotions and such because of it, would that make a difference to you? If you could make a much more comfortable living thanks to the magic pill, would it be worth it to you to perhaps trade a part of your future away to get ahead now?

Just how honest can you let yourself be in answering the gist of the main question.

I'm far too competitive to ever use anything that would give me an unfair advantage over my opponents and colleagues.

Competitiveness is a strange thing, because it is, in my estimation, the thing that leads these athletes to use steroids, while at the same time the thing that keeps me from it.

The way I see it, competitiveness can make you so blind to all but winning that it can drive you to cheat. At the same time, and as is my case, it makes me so desire to be the best that I can not and will not allow anything to take the credit for something that I have worked for. I could not stand to think that I succeeded only because I took a pill. I imagine that these athletes feel the same way, but they're too blind to care.

But anyways, back to your original question: I can honestly say, with no doubt in my mind, that there is no way that I would ever take something to give me an unfair advantage. Even if I knew that my competition was doing it, my competitiveness would never allow me to. As I said, they may be blind, but I could not allow myself to give a pill credit for my accomplishments.
