upgrade problems

I just tried for 4 hours to upgrade Gal Civ via dialup - two times i was booted midfile. THEN two times I finally downloaded the whole thing just to get a permission error when unzipping the last of the files! NOW I have to download it all AGAIN! :VOMIT: :VOMIT: :VOMIT:

PLEASE tell me there's a simple solution!

I'm referring this to someone who should be able to help you.

no help yet - and also another problem with DSL at work regarding the multimedia files - first the upgrade was 30 MB NOW it's reporting as 81 (i.e. new full download) and keeps giving me Error: SDS0004 Could not retrieve file XXXXXXX on server http://scripting.stardock.com/ This happens with different files - can't you use AT LEAST use or build in a utility like netscape smart download utility that prevents the MULTIPLE downloading of the same material?

I too have experienced this problem. On a fast, stable DSL connection it took me 15 tries to download the multimedia upgrade. Like you, it crashed repeatedly giving "Error: SDS0004 Could not retrieve file..." error messages.

When it finally completed and began the installation process it crashed yet again -- this time complaining that the file PLANET18.BIK was missing.

I'd like to try this game before my Drengin.Net account expires, but if this is the level of support and technical competence we can expect from Stardock it's simply not worth the aggravation.

People, it is VERY easy to write a download manager. All you need to do is compare the file on the local harddrive with the files on the download server. Whatever Drengin is doing, it's (a) broken, and (b) much too complicated. Keep it simple folks.

Again I have a download that looks corrupted. And again I feel I must ask if the DGM is doing any CRC checking.

Please do this for me. Please run drengin.exe with the /d parameter to turn on extended debugging. Then download galciv. After encountering the problem please email me the debug.err file

'I'd like to try this game before my Drengin.Net account expires,'

It's been explicitly stated that noone's account will expire before GalCiv is in final release. You'll have a while before this is a concern.

It's not always as easy as you imply, especially when the same client is used for multiple accounts that don't have the same access permissions.

That having been said, I'll agree that the current DGM doesn't work very well at times.

"That having been said, I'll agree that the current DGM doesn't work very well at times. "

well.. that's pobably why it's not a v1.0 release yet ;P

Anyway, I've turned on the /d debug parameter, and am currently doing a "second pass" on the download, and so have noticed that DGM seems to recognise the fact that the file I'm having trouble with have been downloaded, but downloads them anyway (unless I have miss read the debug messages) any way, I'll be emailing both debug_err files tonight when I get home from work.. hope that it will help.

Floods here are over, phew, so I can test more :)

I have problems with DGM as well, I will try the /d parameter, and send the report, if any

I have something strange happen when I start the Dregin Manager. It look like the Dregin Manager is tring to update its self but at the end it say Permission Failed Error 70.

I close the error box and everything seems ok.

Strange it may be, however, using /d option seems to solve the problem... I am in the middle of download of Multimedia, and without problems ... Nice piece of coding, anyway :d

Just an idea - what about list all the files that are necessary for smooth (as possible :d ) run? I think there is quite a few "file missing" issues....

So, I uninstalled all and tried to reinstall with /d- it crashed... I wanted to send debug.err, but by mistake I deleted it... Anyway, there was just 2 times retry to download one file (coreships.md_) and then some "file not exist" line... Nothing exceptional apart from them...

'The old Drengin manager worked flawlessly so why is the new one so crappy?'

The old DGM didn't work flawlessly, and the old DGM didn't have other things, like DirectSkin or the self-updating code, potentially causing unexpected problems.

In regards to the "Permission Failed Error 70." error. You will need to do a full install to correct this problem. You can download the lastest build of the DGM from http://www.stardock.com/products/drengin/default.asp?page=downloads

In regards to the download issues. I am looking into them and do not have an answer at this time. I will let you know as soon as I do.

Just curious, out of those who are having download problems, how many of you use a date format on your system other than Mondy/Day/Year?
I assume you mean the "short date format". I am using mm/dd/yyyy.

Even with the latest 66c I am still having difficulties with SE not working.

dd/mm/yy here

Part of the problem is the month/day formatting. If your format has the day preceeding the month then that will cause problems. I'm tweaking up a few things in the code now. Maybe I will have a new build for you tomorrow.

Kaput... :VOMIT:

nothing goes anymore ... the latest error i am getting is:" Fatal Error: 53 File not found: 'D\Games\Drengin.net\data\lwn\sm_lwn_icon.gif "

The first time I installed the Drengin Game Manager the Galactic Civ download worked ok. Than I continued and tried downloading multimedia pack.. no luck i just kept getting "SDS000 Could not retrieve the file xxxxx" errors. I tried running it with /d option, still the same...
So I completly reinstall the game manager and try again... well thats where that Fatal Error: 53 comes in as soon as I try and start it.

?!? :(

What do you know.. after refuzing to work for last 30 minutes it is working now?!? Well, it is downloading the GalCiv again so I don't want to jump the gun here.
