Hooray! New Governor General!
And her critics are morons, rednecks and bigots!

Well, we have a new GG, and her name is Michaëlle Jean, Link, Link. Now, I've alweays been a republican (small r, means no royalty, for those who were like "What the f***?" for a moment there), but I think this she is a good choice. She's fluent in five languages, which would be helpful as a diplomat, and she is young (48, and looks younger), which may help bring more young people into politics who are fed up with the same old white guys (no offense to old white guys). She has a lot of experience in news and documentaries, including one that won an award from Amnesty International. Also, as a visible minority and a refugee (her family fled Haiti in 1968 to escape Papa Doc's reign of terror), and with multiuculturalism on the rise (at this rate Toronto will be over 50% visible minorities in a few years), she represents the new face of Canada. And hopefully she won't have ridiculous travel expenses like the last one.
But she has her critics, and most of them are morons or bigots.
I was looking at the "your space" section on CBC news, and I was shocked and almost ashamed to be Canadian. Link
First are the idiots who are saying that the West is getting left out again (seriously, it's getting old) and all of the GGs are from Quebec or Ontario. Of course, these are also the people too lazy or stupid to check their facts. In reverse order, the last 7 GGs are:
Adrienne Clarkson - Ontario
Romeo Leblanc - New Brunswick (although I suppose for people who don't know the meaning of the words "fact check," an Acadian and a Quebecer are close enough)
Ray Hnatyshyn - Saskatchewan (part of the west last time I checked)
Jeanne Sauve - Quebec (originally from Saskatchewan)
Ed Schreyer - Manitoba (also in with the west, although in my opinion shouldn't be lumped in the same pile as Alberta because we are more liberal than the rest of the west)
Jules Léger - Quebec
Roland Michener - Ontario (originally from Alberta)
So we have a slightly higher than average number of Quebecers, but that is because it is the second most populous province in Canada.
Then, I read on, and the criticisism gets dumber.
First, we have the moron criticizing that the GG will sign any bill, even ones on the liberal side of things (part of her job) and is supposed to be an example of "moral Christian leadership." It's a good thing everyone in Canada is a conservative Christian...as an atheist socialist, I missed that memo.
Then the people who complain because she isn't a WASP, or isn't christian, or was born in Haiti. First, how about you bigoted rednecks (no offense to non-bigoted rednecks) just shut the hell up. Way to represent Canada, a country that prides itself on tolerance, multiculturalism and ethnic diversity, ya morons. And to the idiots saying we need to "honor our heritage," not everyone is as white/Christian as you. And you've had all but one so far, so it's someone else's turn. And she was born in Haiti and came to Canada as a child. How bloody long do you have to live in the country before you are considered Canadian? A Canadian born abroad is a Canadian, period. Hell, pretty much the whole damn country (except the Aboriginal peoples) are either immigrants or decendants of immigrants. I'm 15/16th decendants of immigrants myself, and none of those are from the British Isles, yet I am Canadian. Besides, hacving a Canadian born GG is a new tradition, only started in 1952 (and even then, Adrienne Clarkson was from Hong Kong). Would you like to go back to the "good old days" where the GG was some rich British guy with a long title? I know I wouldn't.
So how about you just give her a chance, and stop criticizing her for her gender/skin color/place of birth.
Also, I would like to apologize for the morons mentioned above. I know not all Canadians are like that, just a few of us are seriously f*cked in the head.
And that's the end of my barely coherent ramblings for now.
