Las Vegas

What to do

I'm leaving tomorrow to go to Las Vegas for a few days vacation (holiday). I have never been there before so am asking for suggestions on some cool things to do. We already plan on seeing the Hoover Dam, I don't gamble, am not interested in legal prostitution or an Elvis wedding (not interested in any wedding at all). Besides these things, are there any suggestions for a good time in Vegas?

Thanks in advance.

Hoover Dam... guy I knew while I was stationed at Ft Irwin (35 mi N of Barstow, 34 mi S of Death Valley) got busted for rappelling down it and hanging Old Glory. Appears there are a lot of Federal laws involved in that.

Dude, even though not interested in weddings, gotta drive down the chapel road just to gawk at the options.

Don't gamble... don't matter... just go to people watch - take your watch, you won't find anything to let you know the time

Quite casinos say they are family friendly - some of them have some cool shows

1st time I drove to Vegas (to pick up some supplies at the airport) I was amazed... as we got to the city limits, there were a couple of hundred people spread along the other side hitching a ride out.

Check with the tourist bureau, I can't remember if there are still any old west ghost towns around it... been to some in Goldstone... top of the door frames came to my shoulder (I'm 6 ft) - outer wall came to my forehead at most.

just remember, it's all about gambling, glamore, glitz

Thanks Lantec, Thanks Bichur. Wow.

Not me at all, but I do appreciate good architecture. I'll check out chapel road and view the gamblers. Good advice. A ghost town would be cool. I'm always up for seeing a ghost
or even an abandon town named after one. Definitely will check out some shows.

If you like shopping, I highly recommend the Forum Shops next to Caeser's Palace. One of the more unique shopping centers you'll ever see.

When you're at Hoover Dam, make sure you do the touristy thing and stand with one foot in Arizona and the other foot in Nevada.

I love shopping, to my shame. I'll check it out. Yeah, I plan on doing the tour thing at the dam. Thanks, Jinn Fizz!

Check out the view from the top of the Stratosphere, and you might also like the Fremont Street Experience, downtown.

Surely you can appreciate gustatory art. I recommend scoping the scene out online and finding some dining that fits your tastes. This may sound quaint, but I had some oriental food at a P.F.Changs in Vegas that has yet to be rivaled. I gave it two buds up.

That reminds me... they want all your money in gambling, so the food is cheap.

The rollercoaster, ride the rollercoaster!!!!

Try the roller coaster at New York New York.

I like roulette.

but I do appreciate good architecture

I doubt there's any of that there....eg...reconstructing a fake Venice to save a trip to Italy is about as sadly crass as it can get.

Save up your money and go to a REAL destination...no corporate imitation is worth the time.

Real Architectural History is experienced by being THERE and visualising....[imagination helps] The real Venice is a must-see....human architecture of anthropometric scale, not square miles of mobile car-pack called roads and expressways, etc..

If you're interested in the Architecture of 'advertising with Neon lights'...then Vegas is yer place.....[one day I may yet get there too...just to be horrified by the glitzy commercialism]...

I have a feeling that that will be how I see it too, Jafo. But I'll try to make the best of it. Chicago has some of the best modern archtecture there is, and ancient archtecture can't be rivaled. I do need to see Vegas at least once, though, and am really looking forward to Hoover Dam.

Nice to see you don't gamble, SD....that's a mug's game, except for the operators, who keep getting richer while punters get poorer.

Or if he has the guts, the one on top of the Stratosphere.

The Sahara has a good roller coaster, too.

I have not met a roller coaster that could bring about any other emotion than "Yeah, Baby!!" Thanks for the hook up!
The company I'm keeping will want to see a show, I'm sure. I'll be a passenger for that one, too. Thanks all. I really appreciate the great ideas. I'm leaving in 6 hours (5:30 cst) if anyone has more, I'll check one last time before I print this page and take it with.

Just learned something to think about if you look at this post after you get back:

My sister works in drafting and joist supports - she knows someone who worked on the supports for the Stratosphere coaster - she won't ride it. Hope it was 'thrilling'

heh heh. That makes it better.

shouldn't you be packing?

Leaving work in 20 minutes, home to finish packing, off to meet me senorita y compadres, then to the world's busiest airport (actually I think it's second, now), then on to meet Elvis Impersonator Clergy and legal prostitution coupled with lights, gambling and showgirls. Hmm. No wonder they call it "Sin City". Better bring my penicillan. sp?
