IE 6.0 bug from recent updates

I just fixed a big problem I was having with IE 6.0 that were traced to recent updates of Stardock programs. Also an iexplore.exe HKEY was missing. Besides messing with sending and receiving email in Outlook 2003, at least three other programs that are integrated with IE could not load in normal mode, although they ran fine in safe mode.

I am hoping that this posting will help the software engineers track down the problem.

I began to experience application hangs and general malaise with IE 6 a few months ago. Looking back at old emails, I began contacting some software venders back in May about problems that can now be traced to some Stardock updates. I did allow prerelease versions of Stardock programs to be installed and regularly updated over the past few months. This weekend I uninstalled my entire suite of programs and reinstalled a handful of alpha copies of some of the programs.

However WindowBlinds still prevents Photoshop Elements 2 from loading. Unloading WindowBlinds via the icon in the system tray allows PSE 2 to load. PS CS has different integration with IE and never had a problem loading. Eventhough WindowBlinds program was unloaded, the little animation in the upper right toolbar corner from the WindowBlind "cabal" never left and still functions.

I am not the only one having IE 6.0 problems - Link

The complete troubleshooting process I went through is posted on an aumha.net forum - Link

When Explorer was still sick, I saved startup logs that showed running DLLs with Explorer in both safe and normal modes encase those would be helpful.

If you have IconPackager installed.

Start/ Run: regsvr32 /u "C:\program files\stardock\object desktop\iconpackager\iprepair.dll" and reboot.

If you have Enhanced Dialog installed, un-install it.

Hello,

After editing my registry, IE works. I don't see Enhanced Dialog anywhere. I had uninstalled IconPackager. Could I reinstall IconPackager then run the regsvr32 fix?

i did that - it worked for me - it seems that it's just the repair dll causing the problems

An update,

I spoke too soon about not having Enhanced Dialog. Although it does not show up in
Stardock Central, I see it in my program file. The folder contains the empty folder Places and programs.ini. Do I only need to manually delete the Enhanced Dialog program folder?

Also, eventhough IconPackager was and still uninstalled, I found iprepair.dll in the IconPackager program folder. I followed the instruction to unregister it. That was successfull and rebooted. When I looked at the program folder, iprepair.dll remained. Do I need to be concerned about that? I do plan to reinstall the program.

Edit: Several hours have passed and I have went ahead and reinstalled IconPackager and unregistered iprepair.dll. I'm not sure yet if I should just try to delete the folder Enhanced Dialog from my Stardock program files so programs.ini exists.

I tried to load Photoshop Elements 2 with WindowBlinds loaded as usual at startup. It took a very long time to load and it somewhat succeeded. I have modified PSE 2 with Hidden Powers. That is an add-on developed by Richard Lynch to run macros (actions) like the full version of Photoshop. It is a wonderful tool that empowers PSE users to do things for a nominal cost that the marketing wing of Adobe would have people believe only can be done in the full version of Photoshop. Much of Richard's stuff is placed in the Welcome and Recipe folders at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop Elements 2\HTMLPalettes\. My partial success with loading PSE 2 was that everything seemed to load except the graphics of the Welcome and Recipe window. As the folder is HTMLPalettes, that may have something to do with the IE integration with Stardock programs. Until 7-5, I never had a problem loading PSE 2 with WindowBlinds running.
