Video iPod come this Fall

And video purchasing on iTunes

Apple is planning to introduce an iPod that plays video.  But more interestingly may be the ability to purchase movies and other video from the iTunes store.

Companies involved in the current talks reportedly include Warner Music Group, EMI Group, Vivendi Universal’s Universal Music Group and Sony BMG, a joint venture between Sony and Bertelsmann AG.

Apple’s iPod is still churning out startling financial results for the company, boosting revenue by 75 percent and fueling record profits in the latest quarter. Last week, Apple reported its best quarterly profit ever thanks to iPod sales.

For the three months ended June 25, Apple’s net income rose to $320 million, or 37 cents per share, up from the $61 million and 8 cents per share the company reported in the year-ago quarter. Sales grew to $3.52 billion from $2.01 billion last year.

I bet the screen will be bigger and high-res. I'm also sure you will be able to paly whole movies on it. I can play entire movies on my palm treo 600 (a cell phone) with 1 gig of storage, It will be no problem packing in several movies to the 40+ gigs avaliable on the ipod. Toys like that have been around for a while, but I'm sure that just like most hardware that apple touches it will turn to gold.

My guess would be the iPod video will have a nice out port for piping movies to a TV or other display. Steve Jobs has already mentioned previously that few customers would want to watch video on such a tiny display, but if you could load your iPod up with movies and then go and watch them on your friends HD TV...

You can create a great looking full length movie at about 1-1.5 GB for a regular desktop display, with the right codec (e.g., DivX, XviD, MPEG4). I would imagine you could get the file size WAY down from that for a handheld display, where you don't need near as much resolution. If they come with 40 GB, you should be able to fit a ton of movies on there.
