Public Nudity in the Summertime

Public Nudity in the Summertime

My self-righteousness rears its ugly head

Scorching hot, sweaty weather... you have to admit, you just wanna run around naked. Sometimes I wish it was OK to do that. I mean, hey, we all have the same stuff under our clothes, barring some essential differences between males & females. We're all aware of it. So why not run around naked?

Here in Germany there are many nudist places: at the community pools, at beaches, lakes, spa resorts. Of course there is private partitioning to respect those who may not be in the mood for an eyeful of skin. Europeans don't treat nudity as a taboo like Westerners do, but the culture still respects the fact that nudity has its proper time & place, as does modesty.

I think everyone, even men, can be taken off guard and be unwelcomely distracted when they see a bit too much skin...even on the most beautiful person. Women who are less-than-physically-perfect who see gorgeous women baring all but everything...may feel indignant, maybe a little envious, or even a little miffed. The women who dress immodestly surely must not mind the attention they're drawing to themselves. They're beautiful and they know it.

So let's tally up these effects: Fertile girls, fueled by summer heat and vanity, show a bit too much of themselves to the public. Men get distracted and perhaps form crude thoughts in their minds; Innocent women may feel envious and miffed. What good can come of these effects? I can name only one good effect that comes from young women baring their all: These girls have the luxury of feeling the breeze on their skin. As for the underlying mating purposes of scantily clad dressing, these women may very well be missing out on the company of the classiest men who instinctively avert their eyes when faced with immodesty. The classiest men are too respectful and decent to ogle, much less approach an immodest woman.

Wouldn't it be nice if women opted to wear light, white dresses as the summer heat becomes uncomfortable...Then we'd all see angels going about their day in white, cool dresses. Wouldn't that be a simple, lovely thing to see on a regular basis? Like little white butterflies. No one is ashamed to watch a beautiful, white butterfly. And I'm sure that the little white butterflies feel no shame either. Just freedom.

I say to the fat people, the skinny people, the beautiful and the homely alike: cover it up. This ain't an orgy. This is our world; we share this as our home. Let's try to keep world corruption to a minimum.

I may sound like I'm writing from the perspective of an old, curmudgeony, fat, unattractive woman, but I'm not. I'm one of few ladies in my child-bearing years who tries really hard to dress modestly, and it takes a special effort in the summertime. Sometimes I feel tempted to give in to the mainstream; after all, who will notice my body among all the hundreds of other scantily-clad girls? Well, I know as an innocent observer that no one goes unnoticed. It's intrusive to one's decency to be affronted with unsolicited immodesty.

Nudity is natural, but modesty is what separates us from animals.

This reminds me of an episode of the Man Show. At the end credits that had several attractive women in bikinis bouncing on a trampoline waving the viewer goodbye. "Wow" I thought,
that was so nice. Anyways they dip below the screen and up bounce a couple of Rita McNeil juggernauts laughing at the viewer in all their flesh flapping glory. Mental note never put 300 pound + women in bathing suits on a trampoline EVER again.

Just thought I'd share that.

OK, I stepped away from the computer for a few days to get a life. This article has given me a headache as I struggle to find the words to express my dichotomy of feelings on this subject of nudity vs modesty.

Here's what I propose: My fellow-church-goers may be shocked, but, hey, it's just my fleeting opinion.

I think it would be healthy if the USA had nudist places (private beaches, spas, pools). That way people would get it out of their systems and nudity will no longer be such a taboo. Perhaps people will learn to *cover-it-up* in public places because they know that there IS a place for them to feel the sunshine and breeze on their skin, which truly is a great feeling. I, for one, would have a hard time being naked among naked strangers, so my dream is to own a few acres of land on a stretch of ocean...where I could be nekk'd in the sunshine if I pleased, without being seen by strangers.

I apologize for my self-righteous attitude that I displayed toward dharma...she asked if I thought that a string bikini is immodest...That question demanded a yes/no reply, so rather than beating around the bush I said, "Yes," they're immodest. And they are in general public, which is why I think that nudist/skimpist resorts should be available as an option for people who feel comfortable baring themselves, while protecting the eyes and minds of those who don't wish to behold so much skin. Rather than using this topic to make personal judgments (that wasn't my intention), I meant his topic to be a general critique of society as a whole because of the way it affects individuals. If I wore a string bikini I personally would feel immodest, but if I felt strongly enough about wearing one I'd probably rationalize the feelings of immodesty with, "Hey, everyone else is doing it. I shouldn't feel uncomfortable." But at the end of the day, or the decade, the embarrassment of having bared-it-all would be enough to put me in check. We're all different. I for one, am a fundamentally modest person. I am happy to grant y'all your differences. Dharma, I luv ya no matter what!

Last week I wore a tank dress to a community gathering on a scorching hot day. The dress is shapeless and homely and it goes clear to my ankles. My church guidelines generally dictate that men & women dress at all times to cover everything above the knees and everything inside the general t-shirt line, upper arms included. I knew that I'd probably encounter some people from church at the festival...but I held fast to dressing for the weather, 'cuz I SUH-WET in the summertime. I did see a few people from church. They're nice people, but I could tell that they were shocked that I was *gasp* showing my arms.

Cases like that reveal my ambivalence toward modesty. I'm a complex person! I don't even understand myself half the time. When it's hot, I say, dress for the weather...as long as you're not revealng so much that little is left to the imagination. I admit that I do appreciate my church's guidelines, which are undeniably clear-cut...but...I'm not ready to follow them so precisely yet. This ambivalence is what I think fuels my passion about the subject of modesty. "Hey, look what that girl is wearing! That's not fair! She ought to bear the same burden of knowledge that I have to bear!" is the sort of thing that goes through my mind this time of year.

You need to do a little research on this. They "already" have such things in the USA. You can start with "Black's beach" in sunny San Diego, California. Here's a link:Link

WOO-HOO! Nudity in America has finally caught on. Now if people will start to learn to reserve their appetites for public nudity to places like these... Heck, the streets would be empty in the summertime.

Aww, hunny! Love you too!

To clarify, I don't wear one because everyone else is, I wear one because I feel comfortable in it. I have a couple of tankini's and one pieces too...but funnily enough, I feel uncomfortable in them because the bottoms reveal more butt than I care for.

Ahhh....now it all becomes clear.....

Yeah, Angela, nudist places in America caught on somewhere around the 60s (maybe earlier, but that's as far back as I know of). ;~D

I could be wrong, but that is why they are called "guidelines". There is still freedom of choice, even amongst us Mormons! ;~D

Bag it Angela. No need to appologize.  Live and let live.  We will survive.

I hereby bag it. What a relief.
