People Say Some Pretty Dumb Things

OK, I'll be the first to admit that I take some liberties with language at times. But some people say some things just just simply mae no real sense, and quite often they don't even realize it. While it's hardly a major issue, but it does make me wonder if they even know what it is they just said.

Some common examples which I find both amusing and annoying.

ATM machine. Do you even know what "ATM" stand for? Automatic Teller MACHINE! What you just said was "automatic teller machine machine".

I didn't see nothing. Umm, ok, that means you saw something. You do know that, right?

Save up to 50% and more. Ok, which is it? I can save up to 50%? Or I can save more than 50%?

He's itching himself No, he's scratching himself. Something else is itching him.

It''s our 3 month anniversary Do you know what the word anniversary even means? It means annually recurring date of a past event, as in once a year. Get it?

Does this make me look fat?No, it was the Twinkies that did that. What you mean to ask is "does this hide my fat?"

I set my clock/watch ahead so i am always on time Really? Did you do it in a way that you didn't know it's set ahead so as to trick yourself?

I need gas You do? Why? Are you sure it isn't your car that needs the gas?

I have to take a crap Really? And where are you taking it to? Personally, I prefer to leave them.

Stupid idiot As opposed to a smart idiot?

There are a lot more, but I think you get the idea. If you have one that you hear people say, or say yourself, that just makes no sense at all, feel free to share it with us.

Don't you just LOVE it when people mistakenly say, "I could care less!" when what they meant was
"I COULDN'T care less!!"
I used to do that.
If someone answers me with a "whatever"...I don't bother talking to them for awhile, and perhaps they like that

So, it’s an ATM. Then adding the “what is it” in, we can safely say an ATM machine.


Asking "what is it", the reply is Automated Teller Machine, not Automated Teller Machine machine. The same with SSN and PIN.

Your repeated derogatory statements show you to be an asshole.


Maybe I’ll just go back to my mom’s basement where I can whine on my blog about how some people just don’t know how to communicate.

Sorry doc but that's wrong. What you are quoting is "how" the macine communicates to other machines. ATM is the name and it stands for automated teller machine. Just go ask at a bank. I did.

I'm sorry for the rather...insulting post. It wasn't meant as something to be promptly deleted, nor do I think it necessarily warranted such a dreadful fate I simply wanted people to see that there are several angles that these "incorrect" figures of speech can be viewed from. The world is not a stark landscape of black and white.

In all fairness, the comment wasn't something that should have been marked for deletion. It made valid points. Granted, it was overtly condescending, but not at the aim of offending, simply for provoking one to see matters from a different perspective. How fair is it to call people idiots for using this language? Certainly no more fair than my response.

Ah, and I almost forgot, quoting out of context is such a dispicable offense.

With some of these you have a point, but every language has its idioms, since there is more than one way to skin a cat, even while speaking. ;~D

My favorite of this type of mis-speaking though is: "It's 9:22a.m. in the morning"...

Oh really, as opposed to that pesky "9:22a.m. in the evening"?

You're new here and so don't know the personalities of the assorted bloggers we have here. A great many of my articles are humor or satire. Once again, a bit of this is taken out of context. I believe I said "for provoking one to see matters from a different perspective". This, in other words, would mean "thought provoking". Well, since apparently we have trouble with the use of the word "provoking" (which isn't always a bad word), I'll say "thought inspiring". I also said it wasn't meant to be offensive. So really, it didn't fall in the realms of "trolling". Unless you define "trolling" as "having an opposing view point", in which case we run into a striking problem of closed-mindedness. Yes, it was contrary to popular opinion. When it enters into the realm of trolling is when the opposition is done without any purpose, foundation, or intent other than to inflame. Now, if you're offended when someone simply has a different opinion or says "well, try to think about it this way", then it would seem that any given single party state would gladly accept you into the ruling class. Once again, trolling has nothing to do with offering a differing opinion for the sake of discussion. Trolling lacks reason other than to offend. And yes, the category here was humor...but that doesn't mean it can't support discussion, does it?

Now, so you don't claim I'm trolling again:

How about when people answer the phone and say "This is her/him" instead of "This is he/she". Silly people and not knowing which pronouns to use where.
