The Illinois bill to ban the sale of video games to minors has proceeded one step further. CNN/Money reports that the State's House passed the bill on a 106-6 vote, with the Senate passing the bill earlier this month. The bill now moves to Democratic Governor Rod Blagojevich, who will almost certainly pass it since he proposed the ban late last year.
So what does this mean for gamers? The bottom line is this legislation is aimed more at retailers than gamers, fining store clerks $1,000 if they knowingly sell adult video games to minors. On top of fining the clerks the bill will also make it the store's job to determine what they see fit to sell to minors, so if you can't get something at "Store A" just stroll down the block to "Store B."
Bills of this nature have been repeatedly shot down by federal judges including one that was struck down late last summer in Washington. Although the bills normally come across as good ideas, the numerous loopholes and ill-conceived plans to enforce them don't help the bills and this one seems no better, as lawmakers from Illinois have already pointed out.
