Developing a work ethic at an early age.

My kids are coming up with schemes to make some dough this summer.

My eldest, Shea, is advertising a dog-walking service.  She's made herself a flyer to post at the store, and has herself a schedule and fee scale in the works

My middle dude, Davey, has a mowing service on the go.  He's made a flyer too, and he's discussing the merits of using our mower vs someone else's mower.

I don't know how successful these schemes are going to be, but...at least they're trying.  They're realizing that if you want things, you have to make money.  To make money, you have to work.

Just goes to show what a motivator  the almighty dollar can be!

Hehe, good for them! That'll make them appreciate even more whatever they want to buy!

I remember selling watermelons on the side of the highway with a friend way back there around 1975 and '76. I gotta tell ya, it was a hoot! You got to deal with all these different personalities which was worth a lot more than the cash we made. Of course these days, I dunno if I would leave a couple of 14 year olds alone on the highway like that. Times were different, I guess...

Yeah, I think that they were.  I'm lucky; we live in what basically amounts to a gated community so I'm not so wary of letting the kids go off and do stuff like this. If we lived off base it would be a different story...

Right on, Dharma. I remember being Shea's age and raking yards in the fall to make money. It's so important to develop a work ethic. The second I turned 16, I got a job serving tables because I wanted a little extra gas money. I felt like I really earned my money. I think when everything is handed to you, you don't realize the importance of it.

This is very true.  She's got herself a customer already...she's walking a neighbor's dog 3 times a week for half an hour at a time.

Aww, it's not so bad!  You're married and have a house, right?  Got a car, and are making it on your own?  That's what I'm talking about.  Understanding that you have to work for what you want, that you can't just sit on your ass and have things handed to you (unless you marry well, that is ).
