She did not say what I thought she just said...

...sadly, yes, she did.

I couldn't believe my ears...

I was telling my kid that base law says you have to wear your helmet when riding your bike.  His friend   (who happens to be black) was there too, so he got involved in the conversation.  I told them that if they cops caught them riding without helmets they'd be in trouble - and that'd be double for my kid because his dad's a cop so Jake damn well knows better.

His friend says he doesn't have a helmet, and goes into his kitchen to tell his momma that he doesnt have a helmet so he can't ride his bike (we're standing at the end of our cul-de-sac on the sidewalk in front of this kids house)

Him: "I can't ride my bike without a helmet.  Jake's momma says it's the base law and his dad's a cop.   If I get busted the cops'll come and tell you and I'll be in trouble"

Her"  Aint nobody gonna tell me nothing. You go ride all you want.  Besides, what're they gonna do?  Tell me you can't? They aint gonna talk to a black woman like that."

Yes, she did.  Tossed out the race card, even before anyone had said anything to her.

Now before anyone goes off on a tangent about racisim, let me say this:  I'm just repeating what I heard.  I'm not the one bringing race into it.  It started out as a conversation about bike riding and helmets, and turned into "it's because I'm black" defense.

All the progress made against prejudice...it's all too easily undone.

Well .. just let him ride without a helmet..and when he falls off and cracks his little skull then see how much he is going to appreciate why there is a law that says you have to wear a helmut when you ride your bike.

It aint got nothing to do with prejudice or colour or anything it is just common sense.. besides it shows how much she thinks of her kids safety!

Well said, Phoenixboi. I was going to make exactly the same point. The other thing that occured to me is the child in question is incorrectly learning from his Mum that it is okay to use the race card, particularly to flout current laws. It is wrong on so many levels.

How come when someone who plays the race card like that gets in trouble it's because they're black, but then they can circumvent laws because their black? I'm more than a bit confused.

As long as the 'so called' black leadership continues to play the victim card, some blacks will use it.  I think a helmet law is stupid as well (none of us had them and we did take some spills), but telling yoiur child to break the law is not the answer.  Now, he may just get a warning.  IN another 10 years, he will go to jail, and I am sure his mother will be screaming "they set my baby up".

Uh, huh.  No lady, you did.

I lent him one of my kids' helmets so he could ride with Jake.

Exactly!  And so the cycle of racisim continues.

Because your skin color can be used as either a weapon or an excuse, depending on the circumstance.

Yes, she did, when she taught him by example.  Perhaps I should print out a copy of my 'raising free thinking children' article and give it to her.  Her children are learning from their mother that it's okay to use your ethnicity to get what you want.

why worry about this family?
Clearly this woman doesnt care about her kids, and she is a lowlife.
I never wore a helmet on my bike, on my motorcycles never!
I had a son, and BAM! I am #1 helmet enthusiast,
Why? its called love,
She obviously cares more for her own time and relaxation than for her little boy, Hurraah for you for caring enough to tell the boy he needs to be safe,
maybe he will grow up knowing love after all.

This woman is just plain stupid.

About 540,000 bicyclists visit emergency rooms with injuries every year. Of those, about 67,000 have head injuries.

1 in 8 of the cyclists with reported injuries has a brain injury.

Two-thirds of the deaths here are from traumatic brain injury.

A very high percentage of cyclists' brain injuries can be prevented by a helmet, estimated at anywhere from 45 to 88 per cent.

Many years of potential life are lost because about half of the deaths are children under 15 years old.
