Behold the Powers of the Thong

I was reading an article in the NY Times about a mother who went shopping with her fourteen year old daughter and her circle of friends. Apparently, the girls dragged the mother in Victoria's Secret to browse at some underwear. The girls began going through tables of thongs, collecting multiple pairs, deciding which ones they could coordinate with their low rise jeans. The mother was baffled. She was wondering what in the world would possess these girls to want to purchase what is the equivilant of butt floss.

Like the mother, I do not understand this. First off, what would possess fourteen year olds to go shopping for underwear at Victoria's Secret? As a former VS employee, I have seen the prices of the underwear and know their expense. Since when is a teenager able to afford $20 underwear?

Secondly, why would a teenager have any business shopping at Victoria's Secret?? Who in their right mind would approve of their teenage daughter wearing sexy lingerie?? Who in the world are they trying to impress?

The sexualization of society has heightened to new levels and I am becoming more and more afraid to have children.

Good points you raised, but I'm trying to figure out why they would coordinate with their jeans. I mean, if your wearing jeans, you can't see your underwear, right? And if you were to take off your jeans, would anyone really care what color your underwear was (assuming it's clean of course)? Maybe it was just a social activity for while the mom was shopping for herself? There are some strange people out there...

Plenty of VS underwear is cheaper than $20/pair--in fact, they have regular 5 for $25 sales. On that same note--they sell a great color selection of cotton underwear--including cotton thongs. I don't necessarily think that thongs are sexual--they can be, but they can also be great for simply avoiding VPL.

Danny--I'm assuming the girls were planning to do that "classy" fashion statement of having your thong go higher than your low rise jeans. Disgusting if you ask me--but then, nobody did.

They wear the thongs high on their hips and the jeans low....and you get to see the top of the thong above the underwear...like this:

It's colloquially known as a 'whaletail'.

Alison:
I used to work part time in the store on base, and I saw little girls coming on and buying thongs regularly. 12 and 13 year olds, buying candy and stickers and thongs with their allowance. *sigh*...we, as a society, sexualize children at progressively younger ages, yet we wonder why we have issues with pedophilia and teen pregnancies.

Danny:
I think dharma explained it all with the pic:)

Shades:
As a 23 year old woman I can sometimes get ancy about VPL, but why should a fourteen year old have to worry about it???

Dharma:
I couldn't agree with you more. In a way it seems like an endless cycle. Society stresses how important it is to be sexy, little girls go out and buy these clothes, lingerie gets men horny, and boom....man is arrested because he slept with a fourteen year old.

I don't know if it's society or the parents' fault. Maybe it's a combination of both.

We need more pictures.

I don't really understand this topic completely yet...

Just because some mothers (parents) are idiots should not make you afraid of having your own.  Yours may change the world.  But they will need a good upbringing, and that is where you come in.

You dirty, dirty boy! hehe.

Dr. Guy:
Very good point. I know I want to have kids one day, but I think I need some more life experience before I go bringing one into the world. I feel like I have had a pretty decent upbringing, and I hope to do the same for my children.
(by the way, I was reading Dharma's article asking everyone to post pictures and you look exactly how I pictured you--like a distinguished professor!)

For the most important job in the world, there is no certification, and no training manual.  We all have to learn by OJT, and examples we see.  I was older than you when my first was born, and it scared me to death!  And boy did I make some mistakes!  None fatal or permanent thank god!

Well that answers my question about underwear and jeans. I'll stand by my earlier statement about people being strange...

Dr. Guy:
Wouldn't that be something if there was a training manual...haha. I think mistakes are another great way to learn...it's almost impossible not to learn from them!

Danny:
Glad you got your answer and I couldn't agree with you more...I don't understand why in the hell people would put their underwear on display for the entire world to get a glimpse....whatever happened to the wandering imagination??

I did when I was 14--and that was a while ago at this point--so, this "sexualiztion" of society is not as new as it seems.

I have first graders who have sexually gone further with another person that I have, and I am 18 years older than I am.

I think THAT is scary.

My 17 year old sister wears thongs...I can't stand them but she says they're comfortable. She's not wearing them to show off the fat rolls that would bulge over the "waistband"...she just likes them I guess. But I think I'd save the thongs for a more adult crowd.
