If you could, would you?

And what would you have done?

I was watching a show about cosmetic surgery on Discovery Health Channel earlier this evening.

The things that people have done....from the (nowadays) mundane breast implants and rhinoplasty to the more exotic penis enlargement (yes, they can do that!) and labial reconstruction (yes, they can do that too).

I started thinking about what I would have done if money was no object...

I think that I'd have veneers put on my teeth (I have some chipped and discolored ones and I'm self concious) and I'd also have breast implants to make mine symmetrical again (and whilst I'm at it I think I'd have them transformed into nice perky D cups - just because I could).

I don't think that I'd get anything done to my face.  I'd be afraid of ending up not looking like myself, dig?  After seeing what Botox has done to Nicole Kidman (she looks like a Klingon), what face lifts have done for Mickey Rourke (ewww!) and how nose jobs can leave you with...well, take a look at some of the Jackson family and you'll understand my concerns (Farrah Fawcett too; no-one's nostrils are supposed to look permanently flared like hers do....she resembles a horse in full gallop).

If you could get plastic sugery, would you?  If you wouldn't, why not?

And if you would, what would you get nipped/tucked/lifted or flattened?

i know it can sound like a 'yeah right' but i wouldnt change anything. Even if i could. I'm quite happy with myself. The only thing i sometimes hate is my nose, haha! But i wouldnt touch it for the same reasons you've pointed out dharma. Plus it's my nose that makes me look like my Daddy so much. So no touchin it!

A very mean ex~husband once said that the doctor would have to start at the bottom, drag everything up, and
tie it off at the top of my head! And he wasn't joking...the only thing I "excised" was him......outta my life!
Now. What and would I? Yup. How much space do I get?
Well I'd have a face-lift, got that turkey waddle thingy going, and have baggy upper eye-lids, sure need alot of dental work
and then the boobs...oh my, I'm tall and big boned so they could be a size 38-D, would get a tummy tuck as I've had two kids, and lost mucho weight! Maybe I'd get tush implants since my backside is flat.....and oh yes, need a chin implant as mine is receeded.
The good news is I have high cheek bones, cute dimples ( on my face ) a pretty smile, and really care about people.
Oh and why, because life has taken a toll on me, and it shows, the outside doesn't match how I feel inside about myself, and it hurts.

I'm reminded of something a friend who works in the fashion industry said to me once. She said the ugliest people in the fashion industry are the models. She couldn't get over how nasty, rude and ignorant most of them were. I've never been attracted to people who 'know' they are good looking because they don't realise how ugly being an egotistical twat can be. Not only that, but the beautiful people are also really lousy in bed because they think their looks are their partner's ultimate turn-on.

Now, apart from the obvious that most men would like a larger penis, I don't think there is anything on me I would change. I am really happy and comfortable with the way I look, scars and all. I kind of think of myself in the same way as a favourite book. Sure, it might look a little dog-eared and the cover might be fading or maybe there are creases in the spine from the amount of times its been read. But these things are all part of the book's character and I wouldn't change it for the world.

Kind of like "The Velveteen Rabbit" my favorite book.

For a long time, I absolutely hated my nose.  It's, well, a prominent feature of my face.  When I went to college, my view about it changed.  I was complaining one day to one of my friends (my friends have always been predominately male) and he said: "what are you complaining about?  You don't have one of those stupid little pig noses, yours looks more like Princess Di's."  (This, was back in the early 90's)  I thought he was insane.  Then, I was complaining to my husband about my nose not too long ago when I was watching one of those make over shows.  He asked me why I would want to change it.  I said because it was ugly.  He said that it wasn't, and it was actually one of the first things that attracted him to me....I then asked him if he had a "nose fetish" and the conversation went very "wrong" from there.

I guess the point is that imperfections are what make us unique.  The people who get to know us and love us will do so no matter what we look like.  It's convincing ourselves that we're OK the way we are that is hard.  It also doesn't help that so many shows are based on making people look better.  Unfortunately, a lot of time people end up looking weird or generic instead.

Anyone else remember what happened to Jennifer Grey?  She was the female lead in Dirty Dancing.  She got the "hump" removed from her nose, and now she's just a generic actress.  She even had a show that lasted about a season that basically made fun of what happened.

The only "alteration" I have ever considered or actually did was getting my hair cut. Otherwise, I'm quite happy with myself....

No, I wouldn't. I suppose I'm just not vain enough to even consider it. I've always valued personality and charactor above appearance both in myself and others.

Wow...seems I'm really kind of vain, huh?

I've never been attracted to people who 'know' they are good looking because they don't realise how ugly being an egotistical twat can be

That's why I dont hang with people who think they're 'hott' either.  That's why Paris Hilton et al really annoy me..because they're so caught up in themselves and how they look that everything else fades into insignificance.

I am really happy and comfortable with the way I look, scars and all.

I have more than a few scars, and I'm actually proud of them.  I also have a few stretch marks on my hips and thighs, and I wear those with pride....my husband calls them 'badges of honor'.  I'm not interested in having them removed...they are part of 'me' now, dig?

I guess the point is that imperfections are what make us unique.

Exactly.  I wouldn't want to look like everyone else, and that's part of the reason I wouldnt want my face worked on (except for my teeth).

The only "alteration" I have ever considered or actually did was getting my hair cut

Ha! I do that all the damn time!

I suppose I'm just not vain enough to even consider it

I think that there's a big difference between vanity and having a certain amount of pride in one's appearance though.  Vanity to me is an all consuming obsession with looking good all the time, regardless of the situation.  Having a little pride in your appearance is different...

I'd still want perky D-cups if I had the chance....

To me pride in your appearance involves wearing clean clothes, combing my hair, and a shave once in a while. Unless it's to correct a severe physical deformity, plastic surgery is pure vanity IMHO.

I have more than my share of scars. Scars are merely tattoos with more interesting stories.

I had to have a nose job 15 yrs ago after breaking it the third time. Other than that, i don't think i would have anything done.

You know, when I got a dent in my car, I had it fixed, when the paint faded I got it re-painted, and when the tires wore out, I replaced them....

Vanity ? Gotta figure I think as much of myself as my car......

So it goes

Okay, so let me ask you this:  women using cosmetics.  makeup, hair dye  etc etc.  Vanity, or taking a pride in your appearance?

That's good that you have that much satisfaction in your personal appearance!

That's kind of what I'm talking about.  I wouldn't have any major bodywork done, but a little tweak here anf there....

Makeup: I see that along the same lines as a guy shaving and putting on aftershave. Caring about appearance.
Hair dye: vanity. Same with a guy wearing a toupe (hair hat).

I see a vast difference between a little makeup or a shave and subjecting oneself to surgery for the sake of appearance.

Broken nose? I'd say that falls under the realm of a medical need, not vanity.

I would hardly compare a machine such as a car with a human body.

Hey these are just my personally held opinions which is what the original article requested. They apply to myself and my beliefs. If you want to subject yourself to surgery for the sake of vanity, knock yourself out. No skin off my nose.

I used to say, "Who in the world would want that??!!" but now after seeing Dr. 90210 on E, I realize that as long as it makes you feel happy, then I'd say go for it!

I would have my teeth fixed (they're a little crooked in one spot, and due to this, I still have a baby tooth!) and possibly some lipo to get rid of my love handles. I never had them before I turned 23, and now I want them outta here! I can't seem to find an exercise on my own to make them go away, so why not. I might also want a breast reduction. 34 D is a lot to be lugging around for a tiny person!

As do I.....and some people tend to go over the top with it and 'tweak' or change everyhting about themselves.

Holy cats, chicky!  That's a whole lot of cleavage you're carrying around!

I have actually had surgery. It was for non-cosmetic reasons, but since I was unconsious anyway....I got a free face job out of it! I had my upper jaw realigned (it was 7mm off) and when they moved it forward to match my lower teeth, I had my nose fixed (got rid of the "witch's hook", had my cheek bones enhanced (just a result of moving the jaw forward) and the best part of all....a lip job. So now I have full "pouty" lips. (but not too much)

The surgery was to realign my jaws. 6 teeth never developed so my upper jaw was much smaller than the lower. I had no cheekbones, no upper lip to speak of, HUGE gaps in my teeth and jaw pain. I am thrilled with the result but I don't know if I would have been willing to through with the pain and having my jaw wired shut for 2 months simply for vanitiy's sake.

That being said. I am saving up for a boob lift and tummy tuck when I am 50. By then it will be as easy as getting your hair dyed...I hope! I would love to eliminate the stretch marks (even though my husband calls them "badges of honor" too!) and get my perky boobs back, but unless it is less painful than surgery is today....I think I will pass it up and spend my money on something else.

Hair dye: vanity...if you obsess about the roots! Otherwise, it's like a new outfit...it just lasts longer!

I know!  The things people do to themselves in the name of 'beauty'!

I think that you have an insight about this cosmetic surgery gig that a lot of us don't have...you've experienced it.  You had yours done to correct an obvious and probably disfiguring medical problem, but still...you know what the recovery is like and what level of pain people experience.

unless it is less painful than surgery is today....I think I will pass it up and spend my money on something else.

That's the only thing that puts me off getting anything done....I'm not a big fan of pain.

Otherwise, it's like a new outfit...it just lasts longer!

Yes!!!  I have so much fun with haircolor...I love how something as simple as a subtle change in haircolor can really have a big impact on your entire appearance.

You know I've seen so many shows with people doing stuff to themselves. The pain they go through makes me wonder why they bother. I know they do it for self esteem reasons and such.

Personally all I ever to myself is change my haircolor or hairstyle! I know that's not nipping or tucking, ha, ha. Honestly though, I don't know. I'm happy with myself, except for trying to loose some weight right now. Now dental cosmetic surgery, yeah, definately need to have my winning smile back and that's in the plan!
