Station Exchange Coming Soon

Sony Online Entertainment has become the first major U.S. publisher to create a trading facility for its games. Although SOE has developed numerous MMORPGs (EverQuest, Star Wars Galaxies), the only game that will take advantage of the "Station Exchange" will be EverQuest II which has roughly 350,000 users.

Station Exchange won't go live until June and if successful the ability for players to spend real money on virtual items maybe extended to their other games. The move is quite surprising because SOE has been one of the fiercest opponents of such activity and has to deal with spending "40 percent of our customer service man-hours [on] dealing with fraud, it's in our interest to deal with it," said John Smedley, SOE's president.

SOE has already stated that the Station Exchange will only be available to some servers so people who object to the practice can chose not to be on the designated servers. SOE also is not hiding the fact that this will give them an opportunity to make some extra money, but overall they claim that the overall goal is to eliminate the fraud by creating a secure trading house.
