There is a new Pope

We will know who in an hour

It will be interesting to see how the talking heads treat the announcement.

This is kinda cool for me, this is my first papal election and it's something else to see all the pomp and ceremony surrounding what is without a doubt the longest held tradition/institution in the World.

It surprised me by how quick it was.  But I guess the choice really does not surprise me.  It is going to Piss off a lot of pundits too.

I know. I was listening live and could not hear if it was Benedict or Benedictine,so I googled it. First site already had his name up there! They were fast!

One thing's sure., his is not going to be a long papacy

Take a look at this

Yea, I dont see him living until he is 100 or older.  But then all the 'leading' candidates were well over 60, and most over 70, so I guess it was not meant to be.

But that is just stupid (the link) as it has already happened, and this is the 266 pope, not the 112. (altho Rome did not fall back in the midevel times)

I do hope Nostradamus is wrong in this case.

Well, Allah has already predicted that a tidal wave would wipe out the US in 2007, so I guess the backwash could drown Rome.

But I dont hink it is going to.  When it does not, they will just have a new meaning of that Quatrain by Nostradamus.

Yeah, maybe. But Nostradamus IS cryptic most of the time

was the 111th pope assassinated in Italy?

I could probably use the words of Nostradamus to make a prediction about my cat's next bowel movement... such is the nature of much of his vague "predictions"

The church also already did the split thing waaaay back. And since Ratzinger is a big traditionalist, he'd probably run the risk of assassination by staying in Rome because that's where the seat of power must be.

That said, I don't think we're going to have this Pope for all that long. He's already 78, and lets give him the benefit of the doubt and good health... my money is on within 10 years we'll be doing this all over again. If his reign is even shorter than that, I'd put money on the next Pope being much much younger and a fairly junior member of the College of Cardinals.

Osama?

P.S. How do you quote text? I'm not able to do so even after clicking the Q button 5 or 6 times

I am kinda glad that we're finally running out of "end of the world" prophesies. Hopefully once we pass the next two popes (and the 2012 end mark in the Malachy Prophecy) this will all be put to rest and we can finally silence the loonys who constantly cry "The End is Near!"

I agree.  The patteren is never 2 long term popes in a row, so this is more a care taker role to turn over the college of cardinals, and then the next one should be a lot younger.  Besides, Pope JPII is an impossible act to follow and Pope Benedict XVI will probably not be as active or make that big of an impression.

It was a muslim scholar who said that Allah was going to wipe out the US with a Tidal wave according to the Koran.  Osama has not said anything to my knowledge.

As for the quotes, I could not use that with Netscape either.  So if you cant use the quote buttons, just use the tags [ quote] [ /quote] and cut and paste the text between them.

Nah, they will just say they miscalculated and the end is still near!

heh, the Malachy Prophecy so far is the best one I've read. In interesting ways they've tied every pope since Innocent II to the list, in some cases it's just uncanny. It's the only real specific and detailed "End of Times" sort of prophecy out there that holds any weight at all.

111th Pope in Malachy's Prophecy would be from the Benedictine Order (though this was not an original part of the prophecy but added by St. Benedict later) and was given the title "Gloria Olivae" (The Glory of the Olive... this IS from the original Prophecy).

So Ratzinger picked up Benedict as his name, score one for the end-of-the-world nuts, but that's not part of the original prophecy. Not sure yet how they'll tie him to "Gloria Olivae" yet though. Should be interesting. 112 is going to be Peter the Roman and he will see the destruction of Rome and the End of Times. The time of the 112th Pope is supposed to be a time of great persecution of Catholics, the fall of Rome and finally Judgement Day.

Since this is a known prophecy to the Church, I wonder how much it affects the selection of Popes. Seems pretty amusing that Ratzinger would pick the name Benedict XVI with it known that the (ammended) prophecy calls for his number in the sequence to be from the order of Benedict. Is the church determining events to try and fit to this prophecy, in an attempt to go "The end is near! COnvert and be saved!" to try and drum up numbers?

I think one of the links from Don linked the Olive part by something Pope Benedict XVI said. They are that quick!

May the new Pope be guided by the same wisdom and love that Pope John Paul had. May he live a long and healthy life and lets all eat eggs Benedict in his honour tomorrow morning
