Now I really feel old.

For those who can make them, I say go for it.

For people like me, well............uh? the static one is okay, right?

The avatars on WC have to be in .jpg format.

Note: Image will be scaled to maximum of 50x50 size. .JPG file format only.

As far as I know .gif and maybe .png are the only formats that support animation.

(Someone more knowledgable correct me if I'm wrong.)

You're correct, tjesterb. Why not a change? Allow .gifs. Just a suggestion.

I think allowing .gifs would be probably easy if the coding was set up correctly. It should be able to be switched in a control pannel (Only if they made one)

Thanks Bichur. Frogboy? Any hope for this? Weaksid said it can be done and he's never lied to me.

They look good SD! I vote yes!

.gif's might increase load time....maybe not one at a time, but pages of them sure would.

Cerebro said the one thing I thought but never posted. If people start putting .gifs in place of the .jpg. This could increase or decrease load time. I guess it would come down to how well the server will handle the file format. It's a iffy issue. The developers should know more on this subject since they coded the site.

Also while I'm at it, it comes down to... Did the developers think ahead to maybe allow other image formats to be used?

SD is doing some really sharp ones, and they work at less innovative sites...lol...I'm sure we can do it here

Animated avatars would drive me nuts personally.

But if they are allowed I bet you all that Jafo's avatar would have something to do with that "spell correction" smiley of his.

Looking at the .gifs posted against the .jpgs. It will definally increase load time. You think it's sluglish now.....

No offense, but who said go find a monkey wrench?

Maybe if it hadn't been mentioned they might have missed it (hope hope).

But yeah, you're right. AnS [to name just one] has lots of animation on their site and it takes forever to load (dialup), but then they also have a lot of graphics {tho not as much as I seem to remember}.

As far as I know .gif and maybe .png are the only formats that support animation.

Only gifs support animation and they are limited to maximum 256 colours.

Depends. Gif doesn't compress as much as jpegs, but since they are limited to max 256 colours the size get limited as well.
But if there is a large amount of frames in the animation even a 50x50 image might grow to quite few hundered kilobytes. Deviantart allows gifs, but have a limit to the size of the avatars.

So let's make it a 50 x 50 pixel .gif with a max size of 10-15 k. A lot can be done with only 10k

I created my own spellcheck smiley.

SD, go for it and see if an error pops up. I've seen skin perviews that were gifs.

I like this idea.

Besides, if it slows things down too much, we can alway go back to static.

bump. Would like to hear from Fogboy or T-man or someone as to whether or not it is being entertained.
