Winstep releases Workshelf v1.71!

WorkShelf is the Swiss Army knife of User Interface enhancements.

Intended as a multi-leveled desktop replacement, WorkShelf is equally at home functioning as a tabbed program launcher. Like a dock, but better. It enables you to organize your most often used applications and documents into categorized shelves while taking as little screen space as possible: when not in use, WorkShelf can automatically collapse into a small strip of tabs.

WorkShelf also gives you access to frequently used system folders like the Windows Control Panel, My Computer, Network Neighborhood and more! Thrown in support for built-in modules such as a speaking Atomic Clock, Recycle Bin, Email Checker, Weather Monitor, CPU, Net and RAM Meters and the amazing - GNOME inspired - 'fortune cookie' Wanda fish (with more modules forthcoming) and you have a software marvel you’ll soon find you can’t be without.

Version 1.71 is a major update introducing several important new features: new modules that provide a mind boggling array of statistics, balloon tooltips that provide as much information about files as standard Explorer tooltips, image and video file thumbnails, full drag & drop support, dynamic width tabs that can be left, right justified or centered, and many other visual and functional enhancements.

Please, visit the Winstep Technologies website at www.winstep.net for a complete list of changes and additions to WorkShelf. You can also download the latest maintenance release of our popular NextSTART menuing system while you're there!

Give it a try and find out for yourself. I think you will be pleasently surprised.

I'd class it as 'light' on resources

Can anyone tell me how the winstep programs are different from or better than the stardock programs? Does workshelf do something object desktop doesn't? Can they be run together?

Yes they can be run together. As for how different they are, give them a try and decide for yourself. NextSTART has been around since the end of 1998 and WorkShelf since July 2000, they are not exactly 'new kids on the block'. There is a lot of functionality in those two applications, which you will undoubtly agree if you decide to scratch more than skin deep. Have fun with the programs while you are at it!

I downloaded the trial, looks pretty good so far.
Doesn't seem to take as much resource as DesktopX, at least how I configure for my uses.
