Sound bug?

is it me or is the theme song (the sound that keeps playing during the game) in corrupt? It plays for a while than does that out-of-air radio sound.

It, and most other in-game sounds seem to gradually turn themselves off for me. It's not all at once, but it seems to be just one at a time. Quiting and restarting the game usually fixes it.

Actually, that's not the theme song, it's a place holder song until the real music is finished. The real music is much better. :)

As Machina said, some people have had trouble with the sound just stopping. At least one person has reported consistent trouble with the mp3s sounding corrupt but playing fine in winamp.

Could you please tell me your sound card specs, and what version of DirectX you have installed?

Thanks.

Make that at least two people where the sounds dies out on GC, sometimes coming back at startling times, and work fine on winamp.

The last time you asked there were many responses across a broad spectrum of sound cards.

The "at least one person" comment was referring to Periz' problem where he didn't get the mp3s at all in game. I don't remember if anyone else reported that problem, but several people reported the problem with the sound dying out after awhile. Bruno's problem sounds more like Periz' than the other problem.

i assume that the sliders for the various in game sounds and sound effects are not implemented? I can not change them

The sliders don't work yet, but the keypad + and - keys do (or at least did) adjust the global sound volume, and they do have entries in the perfs.ini file, and as such might be adjustable there.

My sound card is a SoundBlaster PCI 512 (emu10k chipset) and I have the latest DirectX (not beta) running on WinXP Pro.

The machine is a Dual PIII 933.

Yeah, your system shouldn't have a problem with it. I'll go over the mp3 code with a fine tooth comb again.

Also, do the button clicking sounds still work when the mp3s start going bad?

Yes, the buttons sound is ok. all other sounds in the game seesm to be ok too. It is just the background sound that sounds corrupt.

A correction though... It sounds corrupt all the time and not only at some point. What I hear is composed basically of high frequency sounds ("blips" and "shhhhhs"), if you know what I mean. ;)

BGA-Br,

The background music isn't very much and it includes sounds that could be interpreted as "shhhs" and "blips". If it works the same from WinAmp as it does in the game then you probably are hearing it as it was intended (and as it was on the OS/2 version, BTW). I never did understand why it was made the way it was, but the title of the file may help. It is called "THINKING.MP3", which sort of implies that it represents the musical image someone had of the mind working on a problem. Perhaps Brad can explain better, since he is the one that knows where it came from.

Thanks for the tip, but no. What I hear is completelly different of what it is supposed to sound (i.e. what you hear when playing the sound in a MP3 player). The "bleeps" I mentioned are really short sounds with a high frequency and the "shhhhhhh" is that "out-of-air" radio sound. In other words, the MP3 file is ok but the MP3 player in Galciv seems to be buggy in my configuration.

Yeah, this is the same problem that Periz was having. Something must be corrupting the mp3 player's sound buffer. The wavs are all right because they're using a different buffer.

Bugs like this make me wish that I had a symbiotic relationship with the computer. ;)
