What is the combat formula? Also, death star movement

Can somebody explain the combat formula to me? If I am attacking, does my defense matter? How is health related to my attack? What determines how much HP I do, and how much HP I lose? If I have a stack of guys attacking, is this better in any way than attacking with 1 guy at a time? How about a stack of guys defending? How does it determine who defends when a stack is attacked?

Also the death star movement doesn't make sense. When I first built it, it had 1/1. Then a couple of turns later after I put a stack on it it had 6/6. Then, later when I took a planet, it had 1/1 again. Also, I noticed the death star can destroy planets and the ships defending them. Why is it then that if I bring a stack with it it will attack with the stack first? That is just wasting ships.

One more thing. It seems like each attack only kills 1 ship. But if there is a stack then each ship in the stack will attack. Is this correct? Is there be any point to bringing mixed groups of ships, say 1 capital ships, 3 medium ships, and 10 small ships?

The Terror Star's movement increasing above one in a stack is a bug.

Yeah there are people out there that have been searching for the definitive way of recreating that bug for ages. If you come up with an exact way of getting the TS above 1/1 let us know :)

I think it is either you drop a very large stack on it, or you end the turn with a stack on it. I also noticed it will stop if you take a planet in that system using transports. Although I noticed a few times, if I attack with a transport and lose it resets me back to full movement so I can keep going (although I'm not 100% sure). I thought it was some kind of killing rampage bonus :-)

One other question:
I just won on the highest difficulty and noticed the little masochistic icon under my name. If I play on a lower difficulty now will that go away?

Afraid so, the shield is based on your average difficulty level. If you want to know more look at the legends tab in the metaverse page.

A random number from 0 to the attacking ship's ATT and a random number from 0 to the defending ship's DEF are 'rolled.' The second number is subtracted from the first, and that determines how much damage the defender takes.

Then a random number from 0 to the defender's ATT (+½DEF, if the defender's DEF is greater that it's ATT) and a random number from 0 to the attacker's DEF are rolled, the second subtracted from the first, and that determines how much damage the attacker takes.

Then both ships suffer the determined damage, and the process repeats until one (or both) are destroyed.

They take turns damaging each other, so both can't be destroyed.

I am pretty sure I have had both ships destroyed with mine being the atk ship and the other on def... Have to watch for that next time I am involved in a war...

Possibly with a fleet? I think when one ship in an attacking fleet is destroyed the next one automaticly steps up.
