bootskin

unmountable bootskin

hello, when i install bootskin everything is fine, i restart, the skin works fine, but just before logging on, i get the "unmountable boot volume" error msg, but when i use the default bootscreen, my computer boots up completely fine, its like the bootskin is taking over more than just my bootscreen or something. if anyone has had this problem and knows what to do, or knows what to do anyway, please please let me know cuz im sick of that damn screen, and that msg.

Unistall the version you have and download, install one of the two other versions made available by stardock https://www.stardock.com/products/bootskin/ (scroll down, under "Alternative Versions"). If you have an out-of-the-box system or a laptop, then your BIOS might deviate from the standard. If none of the two alternative versions work, you are one of the unlucky ones that is not able to run bootskin at al.

i get the "unmountable boot volume" error ms

This sounds like nothing to do with bootskin At least in all the time Bootskin has been around I've never seen such a symptom described - someone else please chime in if I'm wrong.

Did you previously install one of the other (non Stardock) type of bootskin utilities - the type that hacks the NTKernal? Sounds like a symptom of some kind of OS hack?

66xerox66,

You could run "error-checking" in Disc Properties > Tools tab to verify it is not a case of damaged files in the volume (I do this as a matter of course every couple months) - if you do, make sure to select both the "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" options.

I am not sure it is as drastic as this Microsoft Knowledge Base article is addressing, but here is the link anyway: Link.

This is all I have to offer. I don't use bootskin as I like to see the boot options.

Good luck.

i used resource hacker to change my explorer, but i didnt think that would have anything to do with it. and if i uninstall windowblinds/cursor xp, would that make a difference considering i have already had them installed. and THEN install bootskin ?

::applauds Chris TH:: Excellent call once again chris!

i used resource hacker to change my explorer,

bezdezzez, I think what you have going on is 2 differnt bootskins fighting for the same spot in your boot sequence.get rid of your hacked version of the Noskernal,
Restore your back-up of Noskernal(your original system file, you *did make a back-up..right?)
Then run bootskin, you should be fine..

Zero.
