Why NOT an expansion pack with user created ships????

I liked the os/2 Gal Civ better in one significant way. You could design a faster , more powerful ship and set the cost of its components. That is way more flexible than the present game. I do NOT understand why Brad has NOT incorporated that concept into this windows -based game.

I don't know... but sounds cool.

Probably due to the metaverse. It's fairly important that all games submitted to the metaverse are under similar difficulty. Yes you chan edit the files and the AI's will make use of the new ships or buildings, but in reality it's so easy to unbalance the game by doing this.

Perhaps if the metaverse only accepted unmodified game data or preapproved mods.

Seems like this would be a lot of work to do the preapproved MODS thing.

i remember se3 had a very neat game editor. at one time, they encouraged people to send in their custom ship design (images, not attributes), which they then released as an expansion.

Another interesting idea.

Remember though, that most of SE3 and SE4 data for the game was stored in text files, which made them very easy to edit. You could even add facilities, components, races, abilities, and change graphics easily.

I think the original poster's idea was to be able to design your own battleship for example, much as you do in the Space Empire games (and others like MOO, Stars!, etc) and the original Gal Civ for OS2.

I think the ship design features may have been left out for a couple reasons. One being the metaverse as described above and the other, perhaps, to lessen micromanagement to some extent.

but what about just the graphics for the ship design? that is what se3 did once, you sent in your image files, and when they had enough submissions, they sent out an expansion pack with tons of new ship graphics to choose from.

They still do. You don't even have to submit them to Malfador. There are shipsets all over the web for Star Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, and some just made up altogether. You can even make your own race pictures and shipsets for the races in SE4 and even design your own AI. The ship pictures would not hurt the metaverse at all.

That is one of the fun aspects of that series is the flexibility. Just think, you could have your own Evil Empire shipset :)
