Murdered Spring

The day is sunny,
unseasonably warm.
I feel spring tickling the back of my neck,
giggling at the corners of my eyes.
It’s impossible not to feel hopeful.
It’s impractical to ignore insistent joy.
I run in the park and hear exuberant cacophony.
Two spirited geese are honking on top of a tree.
Even the birds hail impending spring.
All seems cheerful and well with the world,
until the migraine headlines are upon me.
Thirty more strangers are dead in Iraq
And I wonder where the spring has gone.
unseasonably warm.
