Newbie Questions

I’ve been playing at the normal level in a gigantic universe. There are several events that plague me.
1) It is guarantee that an alien race, that I set at normal intelligence, goes to war with me in 50 turns or less.
2) Corvettes with Turbo and Mega Phasers are destroyed when attacking simple transports.
3) Battle Hammers and Battleships are destroyed when attacking Frigates.
4)Is it possible to turn off some of the random events, like an alien race getting some sort of Precursor ability that makes them stronger? This one really burns my jets!!!!

If you don't do anything to improve relations beforehand or keep them at war each other then probably, unless your stronger than all of them.

I don't think so. Only if theres a way to do it in the new editors in the beta expansion.

It is really hard to improve relationships when they declare war (the "My Race has been slaves"... etc) before the "Thanks for the drive..." dialog pops up indicating that a new race has been contacted.

yup
you gotta take care of them constantly to make them into friends. Or have a strong enough military and economy that they ate afraid of you. Or keep them at war with other AI's (by bribing them on the diplomatic screen to attack) so they are too concerned with the other AI to worry about you.

Keep at it. check your diplo screen every 3 or 4 turns

good luck!

The last answer is really cr*p. It is apparent that Maxtipherous has never played in the normal level with a gigantic map. If it had, it would have realized that you can not maintain control of the senate and have a stronger military than the AI players. The AI’s overall numbers are clearly in the computer’s favor and that the human player is at a disadvantage. After playing at this level using many methods (strong military, get as much trade goods, paying tribute, go for alliances, etc) does not work. Changing the map to something like rare planets does not work. It seems that planets are rare in the area of your player, but all of the other races has abundant class 15 planets.
My opinion is that the “AI” is poorly designed. The numbers applied at the normal level is too large. I do not want to play a game that takes a Ranger class to beat a Frigate. I am telling my friends not to buy this piece of cr*p. If they want to play it then I’ll loan them my copy.

Maybe you should start out at Small or Medium and move up to Gigantic after you get the hang of the game. I also noticed that it got harder to stay out of war when I went to Large and above. The more planets there were the bigger lead they managed to get in the early game, and the longer it took for me to pull into the lead.

If it takes one of your Rangers to beat one of his Frigates, it's because he's mining several military resources. (The AI does get bonuses at Crippling level and above, but I don't think they're that big.) That's another thing you won't see on a smaller map, because there just aren't as many resources to mine.

And by the way, if you look at Maxtipherous's profile (by clicking on Maxtipherous's name) you'll see that almost all of Maxtipherous's games are in Gigantic galaxys, and none of them are below Crippling. (See how I cleverly managed to work around the fact that I don't know Maxtipherous's gender without calling a person "it"? :) ) You shouldn't jump to conclusions about whether people know what they're talking about or not.

No actually it's not. It sounds to me like you're just upset and wanting to vent. I play on gigantic maps with the AI set to normal, while at first all I did was get my butt handed to me by the AI time and time again until I got a solid feel on how to run the economy while maintaining good relations with most of the other races. Establishing trade routes with the AI brings down the chances are they'll attack you (to do so would seriously damage their economy). That's not to say the one won't come after you depending upon your morality (from what I heard being pure evil human empire can be a handful to run).
Perhaps you need to drop down a AI level and practice more before moving up to harder levels. At least that way you can have a better grip on the economy and relations. Go over to the strategy forum for tips on how other players manage their empires.

Hope this helps,
Kelly

My goodness, how did Veteran Maxtipherous manage to make it to third place in the Metaverse? Your anger is misplaced, young one. This game's AI is not poorly designed, rather you haven't learned the necessary strategy to defeat it. Simply put, you're getting pounded and don't want to listen to people who want to help you get better.
