Clinkerfield attracted a sweaty crowd that packed out The Old Bar in Brunswick on Australia Day Eve to end their residency for January. They were supported by Marcus Teague of Deloris who serenaded us with his darkly sweet songs. Although the sweet soft sounds are hard to play and keep a crowd interested, Marcus was haunting but absolutely beautiful.
But Clinkerfield were the main attraction and they rose to the occasion for the evening. On the tiny Old Bar stage was the most relaxed lead guitarist ever, Ash joined by the classy bass player Matt who did and excellent job of vocals as well. Drummer, John must have been evaporating in the heat but joined Jimmy and his distinctive lead vocals for the long set. They started their set with the slower tunes with the help from a gorgeous cello that added another dimension, while the room mostly full of family and friends withstood the heat with pleasure. Eventually Clinkerfield started with the big tunes that turned the evening into a drunken, sweaty rocking evening. Wailing and serenading us with songs about senoritas, driving and love songs, the evening ended up with sing-a-longs, dancing and a cover song that was sung by a lovely young girl and a drunken but charming Jimmy.
The five piece from Melbourne have been playing around the city recently including at the Green Room’s second birthday. They have 3 EPs out the latest being Treason Season and their set included a selection of tracks including from Look at the Sky; Sweet Senorita and Travellers Heart yet by far one of the greatest live songs from this band is Fuck Love Songs. Awesome way to bring in the national holiday; good local music.
