Now, why would you think that?

Okay, let me set the scene. Busy commercial street during a sunny summer day in Port Vila, Vanuatu. In the midst of the crowd an odd couple. A white man of a certain age (say early 40s) and a local girl in her early 20s. Now as they walk hand in hand, people turn around and look at them in disapprocal, disgust or whatver, and all that behind their backs while whispering not so flatterous comments.

Why dont they just let them be? Even when i walk around in town with my friends and a couple such as the one described above pass us by, they'll start gossiping about them. And i'm like, so what? Get a life! If their relationship doesnt last, and if the girl is only with the dude for the money, or whatever they like to say about them, it's not our problem, it's theirs! And most of all, such a couple can and has proven people wrong over and over again.

My Dad is white with gorgeous blue eyes. My Mum is black, with a melting smile. My Dad is 20 years older than my Mum. And they've been together for more than 25 years now. Through hapiness and sorrow, through wealthiness and poverty, through healthy times and times of illness, my Mum and Dad stood by one another with love and care (and rows too, who hasnt?? lol). Today, when they go to town, they still hold hands. Does it shock people? Why, yes it still does, hehe. Because they beat the odds. Because after being gossiped about for years, Time made everyone shut up.

So now, when i see such a couple, i want to help Time... and make people shut up.

Good luck. You'll need it to make the busy-bodies of the world shut their mouths so that they may open their eyes.

IG, my wife heritage is mixed as well. Her mother is Indian and her father is Australian. She was born in Karachi, Pakistan but is Aussie through and through. So far, we've not encountered any prejudice but we've been told there are certain parts of the world we shouldn't visit unless we want people gossiping about us. I didn't think Vanuatu would be one of those places.

Maso, it wont be a problem if you're a visitor that stays here for a couple of weeks and if you're about the same age as your wife. It becomes a topic of gossip when it is a foreigner of a certain age who has a relationship with a local young woman.
