Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy

Galactic Civilizations: Altarian Prophecy

This will become a sticky but the short story is, we've decided to go ahead and make a premum expansion pack for GalCiv players.

The main features will be:

+ A campaign called "The Altarian Prophecy"

+ A Scenario editor (which will allow users to create their own campaigns and scenarios)

+ A Map editor

+ 2 new races

+ LOTS of new complex random events.

+ New Metaverse ranking category: Scenario leaders (we don't want to penalize people who play scenarios by not counting their scores so what we'll do is have scenarios have their own rankings -- plus that could be a lot of fun where people create scenarios and compete to be best at them).

Target date: January 2004. We'll be taking pre-orders starting in early November. Price: $19.95.

The premium expansion pack development should NOT affect the release dates of GalCiv 1.12 (Nov) or GalCiv 1.2 (Dec) nor will it affect the feature set of those two things.

In other words, those who don't buy the the expansion pack will not be penalized in any way. GalCiv standard will be getting a logistics ability.

Oh btw, the map editor has a really cool 3D engine. I wish we could have our main map like that editor. ;)

... sorry for using the german "language". And for the use of profanity, too ..
I didn't want to offend you, but i didn't expect anyone to find out about the special german "Gal-actic Civilization"... dang!

There is a ton of interesting stuff in the library. I understand things like events may pose copyright issues (for commercial use of art), but has Stardock considering approving some subset of the ships/techs/anomalies?

It could expand GalCiv by a lot (making it nearly impossible to get all the techs in a single game) proably without a lot of cost. Granted Stardock would have to weed through to decide what met their vision of the game, but it potentially add a ton of variety.

Also, I'm pretty sure the modders would be happy to contribute and have their work used on a wider basis...

Don't know if it's feasible, I just thought I'd suggest it.

The library submissions page has a checkbox asking if you will allow SD to use your mod in any compilations they may or may not do... so it's always a possibility ;)

Actually the events we're talking about are much more complex than what could be submitted by users. They require C++ to make them happen.

As for Germany, our publisher, Strategy First, should be able to make the expansion pack available to German partners but that remains to be negotiated.

Brad,

My question got buried a little bit in this thread.

Weird question here...are the 2 new races minors or majors? If so, how will you incorporate them into the current setup? Will this mean a completely new UI?

I tried to find the first thread about the expansion listing some of the things that would be in it. I couldn't find it again but I think I remember him saying it would be two new major races.

this game took soooo long to come out in the uk, will we be able to get the expansion online or are you releasing it in uk at same time as us? not sure i can wait another year/

Good to see this paid expansion officially got off the ground. I know it was a bit of a risk, not knowing if enough of us will really pony up the cash to make it worthwhile, but I am sure it will all work out to everyone's satisfaction.

1) It's part of Drengin.net so if you have Drengin, you get it.

2) 2 major races. new UI.

Thanks, Brad! I'm really excited about this!! :HOT:

There would be two major races added, Frogboy mentioned that in the other page.

Well, feel free to use the Viraxian story line for one of the new races. A symbiont race with lots of "they switched morality again" events. LOL

edit: edit it at will too. ;)

Sweet! I look forward to the expansion - StarDock is awesome!

Now make all my dreams come true; get the rights to Master of Magic and make the long-awaited sequel to the best 4X game ever. You are the only people who could do it right! ;)

Actually, Brad mentioned some time ago that he looked into the rights to Star Control. I would absoloutely go mad if that happened!!! :D

I wish more software companies supported their customers this well.

Thanks, Brad!

Looks cool. :)

One question. The one thing I really want to see in GalCiv is some sort of change to wasted production when a planetary project or researched tech is completed with excessive funding (or just no project is chosen at all); even if it was just a bounce-back of production (minus bonus production) to the treasury as money, that would be great. Any chance of this happening in this xpack?

Yeah, the support for this game is great! After all these months, still patches coming out frequently.

As for Kloreep's suggestion, it would severely reduce micromanagement (at least for me), but perhaps it would change the game too much? i.e., the wasted production is part of the design.

I wonder about scenario design: Will it possible to precise 'Major Race X will follow this tech path' or will we have to guess by setting the AI value of techs and wondering why the Altarians choose this tech and the Drengins that one through hours of playtesting the scenario?

I've been playing it for longer than that in the UK - I kept an OS/2 box running just to keep the original version on!

Brad has said it'll be part of Drengin - subscribe to that for $30 or so and you should be able to download it via SDC.

Brad, can we hope to see some new information about the new races, maybe some sort of new background story, prior to release?

In addition, right now the five races align perfectly with the five rankings of ideology (pure good, chaotic good, etc.). Can we expect to see two new levels of ideology, one good/one evil or two neutral races?
