If you have Stardock Central you can go under Tools-Lookup Serial Number.

i did and it sent me an email saying my serial number is in here and print it out and put it in a safe place. there is no serial number in there.

As far as I know, Stardock Central is the only place that stores the serial number where you can view it. If Stardock Central is recognizing you as a user, can you use it to get the update?

For a long-term solution, you'd probably have to drop Stardock a line: [email protected]

Well, it doesn't look like you ever registered your player on the Metaverse, so this http://www.galciv.com/playerreg.asp won't help you. Sorry, dude. :notsure:

I got a though on those CD keys you have to use on a lot of games,

GET RID OF THEM.

The only purpose the CD key serves is to cause hardship on the legitimate buyer. Basically, if your are like me, and you have over 300 games, and YOU ARE A SLOB like me, it can be hard keeping up with all these CD cases and CD KEYS.

How many times have I re installed a game I hadn't played in nearly a year, only to have to go out in the garage and try to find the filthy CD case that has the lousy CD KEY on it?

IT SUCKS

I mean, what good is it anyway, if someone wants to copy or pirate a game, all they have to do is write down the CD-key and use it theirselves. HOW HARD IS THAT?

but I don't buy pirated software. I buy the real thing, and this CD-Key system is irritating and really provides very little benefit to the software company who issued them.

Thanks,

Mailer

Unfortunatly Mailer, there are many others who are not as honest as you. It is esitmated that 90% or more of all PC games being played are not legal copies.

Stardock was very generous in it's copyright protection for GalCiv. The CD is not required to play, no copy protection, just as you described. Their only small insurance policy is that in order to get updates or participate in the metaverse, you must have a valid and unique key. And I suspect that this small insurance policy is what's allowing the updates to occur in the first place. I understand your frustration but I'm certain that stardock will work with you to resolve this.

This is the first time I have played a game that uses this kind of security and I personally think it is great. When I put on my laptop or desktop, I dont have to find/look for the serial number, just enter my email address and password and whalaa, game updates and patches and no cd required to play! It's great! Just my 2 cents.

Why don't you just set up a text file on your computer and type all your keys into it when you get them? (and back it up on a disk or something)

-obviously that's not much help when you've already lost it but it might save you trouble in future.

That's exactly what I do. Works like a charm, and I never need to worry about losing CD cases or digging them out from wherever they are. I just print the list out or burn it to a CD whenever I do a backup and I've got no worries.

I'm curious where this figure came from.

The CD key won't work if someone else has registered it. That's the anti-piracy. I think Stardock's idea behind it is that the more copies of the base game are out there, the more people may want to reg for the the updates and stuff and thus then pay their 30 bux or what have you to get em. I for one like the concept.

To the original poster: If you have reg'd it, shouldn't your key still be at stardock? I reg'd it once and everywhere else it's been automatic. I haven't had to reuse the key once.

I might try that retrieve the number again a couple times. I don't know why but sometimes things don't work one time and work the next. I suppose I'd be rich if I could figure out why.

I do that too. Then promptly forget what directory the dang file is in....So I keep a hard copy with the path for my records too. I usually don't burn to CD as I figure if I can't keep track of the game cd's how am I gonna keep track of the master list cd. :)

I had to reuse it several times. For some reason SDC "forgot" mine too. Who knows...

I dont mind keys...it's having to have the cd in the drive that makes me nuts...it's an archaic copy protection scheme that doesnt work. Usually there is a no-cd patch released before the game is even on the shelves anyway. And to make matters worse, some games run better without the cd in the drive *coughMorrowindcough*

I have literally hundreds of cds laying around my computers. If i get an itch to play a game I havent played in years every once in a while, I want to play, not dig through stacks of cds that I havent used in god knows how long, hoping that I actually have it in a case and not in some random box in the closet.

It's actually to the point now I will only buy games that dont require a cd in the drive or there is a no-cd patch for out for it.

Oh, and as for the 90% of games not being legit copies number, it's generally accepted that 83.6287629865% of statistics are made up.

No way, I know for a fact that it is 43.9872% that are made up. :D

Anyway though, on the topic of keeping track of discs, well, go buy a CD binder. I have to keep getting bigger and bigger ones for my games in order to keep them all in one. I bought a 128 disc binder a few months back and I only have a couple of pages empty... of course I also haven't bothered putting my most recent purchases in there, so I may be out of room already :SURPRISED:

cad4lfe, did you make sure that your e-mail in SDC is the same e-mail that you registered with? If it's different, it wouldn't find your info.
