Changing Music Tastes...

I'm sure I'm not near alone with this observation... but the older I get the more I notice how my music choices have changed over the years.

When I was a little munchkin, I listened to what my parents listened too. Dylan, Beatles, Doors,Seager, Clapton, Mellencamp, some Floyd... CCR.. etc of that generic type of genre...

Then I got a bit older, and started finding my own music to listen too... Def Leppard, Bon Jovi.. etc... (hey, not my fault the 80's sucked! ;) )

Then came my teenage years.. and my angst at all the world came in... Metallica, Megadeth etc... though oddly enough I also listened to some Ska in those ages too (and still do.. LOVE ska...) Bosstones, Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish, Supertones, Specials, and Twospoons (best band ever... if only because I was the sax player... =) )

Then came college, and I decided I'd neglected Rap.. and got into it... but that didn't last too long (cept for a very few artists...) because too much ego smack talking going on... all most of that music seems to be to me is "Lets have sex" or "I'm going to &*()^ kill you"...

Yet now I'm in a lot more of a mellow mood... Back to Melloncamp, Clapton, CCR etc.. though with some added bands from recently and all....

Not much of a real point to this... other than if this sites still around some years from now maybe I can look back and see how much my tastes have changed again... Though I just hope I never have to add Country to the list.... CCR is about as close as I want to come..... and since I'm in a band mood, I think I'll just list off some good bands that I listen to now to add to the possible nostalgia value.....

Bosstones, Three Dog Night, Blood Sweat and Tears, The Badlees, Blues Traveler, Pink Floyd, Dave Matthews, School of Fish, Dire Straits, BB King, Dream Theater, Hendrix, Jimmy Eat World, Zepplin, Faith No More, Miles Davis, Nirvana (always loved em too much to not add em... ) Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Who, Floatsam and Jetsom... and a few others I can't much think of.....

Uhm... And the Who's best album WASN"T Tommy!!!!!!

(Dark side of the Moon is the best ever!!!)

Oh... I just thought of a point for this article other than what the title sorta stated...

Since I listed stuff I listen to.. if ya know some stuff from those genre's that you think would fit in, list em for me... I'll listen to most anything once...

And I should ammend my statement on Country Music... I'll also listen to Mr. Cash.....

Is there something you used to LOVE when you were younger that you absolutely can't stand now. Or vice-versa.

My example is bad but like you I grew up listening to what my parents liked - all the same things you listed plus, when I was in grade 5 I loved John Williamson (australian country singer) Meatloaf and Mariah Carey - but now I cringe anytime I hear Mariah Carey.
Likewise the Spicegirls -- I was a 13year old girl when Wannabe came out and like all 13year old girls I liked (didn't idolise) the Spicegirls.

When I was younger I thought classical music and music that didn't have lyrics was bad - but now that I'm older I appreciate it a little better. Particularly the lullabys that we played over and over in thr first 2 months of my aughters life. Quiet songs like Beethovens Moonlight Sonata

I don't think I've ever really liked rap and I really don't like techno. I like Eminems songs that have a story -- Cleaning out my closest, Stan I like most songs that tell a story actually - Where the wild roses are, janies got a gun, child psychology

But yeah anyway you've listed what's changed - have you changed so much to not actually like what you used to.

I can't believe you think the 80's sucked man... for my money, the 80's is the best decade of music for me... mainly because i just remember dancing around the house when i was a young lad... Bon Jovi is freaken awesome man...

I have never met anyone that remains faithful to the same genre, there is just so much music out there to enjoy, it's almost impossible... I do hate it when you a typecast as a fan of one particular genre though - i.e. whenever I am at a dance party, people just assume you only like electronic music, and sometimes they have the gall to abuse good old fashion rock and roll or whatever, and that really irks me... Music is just so awesome...

I have recently discovered an great way to find new music - go to Amazon.com and search your favorite bands, and you can then see people who bought that, and what else they bought - you can find some real diamonds you would never otherwise come across that way!

now i am ranting!!! hehe...

good article

Lol, well I guess I shouldn't have said the 80's suck... just not much music from then that I care for... and I'm still and old school Bon Jovi fan!!! I did the same thing with his music, danced around to it when I was like 7-8 years old and playing guitar on a golf club...

Lets see.. music that I used to like that I don't now... I could mention a lot of Rap.... Though I do still listen to SOME of Tupac... and some Eminem, and N.E.R.D.... but that's close to it... I used to like Elton John, but I can't stand him now.... Though can't much think of more... I'm guilty of still liking some of Meatloaf....

I've listened to a lot of stuff through the years . . . I've never been a really big rap or country fan, but I'll listen to most anything else.

Right now I've been listening to Nirvana, U2, Eminem, Our Lady Peace . . . just a bunch of odds and ends. Beatles and RHCP are always good . . .Weezer, System of a Down, The White Stripes . . .

I love Meatloaf and Bon Jovi - I think if you've got sentimental attachment you'll always love it -- even the really daggy stuff, like I have a Kylie Minogue tape, and I had the immaculate collection on tape, and when I was in grade ( i had jagged little pill.
My favourite album (record) was this mixed mix of stuff including moving pictures what about me and my sharona. My other favourite was my mums deltones record.

I loved!!!!!!!!!!!!! the 80s music -- still do. Bangles, Bananarama, Salt & Pepa, -- all those songs on that 80's quiz that was floating round JU a few months ago. I was born in 83 so I grew up with it - Locomotion by Kylie minogue was like my favourite song according to my mum when I was 4. I told her Kylie wrote it and it wasn't a cover.
Elton Johns Crocodile Rock and Candle in the Wind were among my favourites -- not a fan of his new stuff though and I didn't like candle in the wind 97 - I still think if Diana was so special to him he could have written her her own song.
Man I could ramble like this for ages - stop me now

Tex:

Ooo.. I forgot Weezer!!!! They are awesome!!! System of a Down Rocks also!! Still a good chunk of Metal I listen too I just don't get hit with the mood too much.... though I have and adverse hate for the White Stripes... I don't know why but I just can't stand them... I keep telling people to just grab an old 70's album and they will hear what the Stripes are copying and was done better.... Though that's just me lol

Trina:

Well I was born in 81 myself.. but never had much of the 80's music played in the house. My parents had me in their 30's and I think they were already of the mindset of "New music mostly sucks!" hehe Though I admit there are some 80's songs that give me pleasant flashbacks when I hear them, but I'd never be able to tell you either the artist or song name of em lol
