Newbie needs help..

I've just installed 1.10 and all the movie files and some of the news item pictures have disappeared. 
When I install the multimedia or bonus pack updates, the above come back, but at the expense of losing 1.10.
I tried to uninstall the game and re-install the multimedia and bonus pack first, but it tells me (quite) rightly that Galciv isn't installed.
Any help would be appreciated.
