Problems with Stardock Central

Problems with Stardock Central

For no apparent reason, SDC is not updating the threads any more - I can force an update by deleting the files in /discussion - but this is not really satisfactory.

Any thoughts??

Alex

The Monday update destroyed SDC on my computer. To fix it I downloaded Stardock Central from this link http://www.galciv.com/download.asp and reinstalled. That let me get going enough to download the update, but when I click on the Discussion tab it crashes.

Apparently Stardock support must be very busy, since I still can't Stardock Central to open. I've been in contact with them since Wednesday, and so far no help. Does anyone else have the problem of trying to launch Central, it opens briefly, then closes? If so did you solve it? Pls. advise asap. I really wanted to download the update this weekend, but it looks like this may not be possible. I can't believe I'm the only person who is having this problem.
Thanks in Advance,

Gary, does that happen every time? I have cases when it does that but occassionally.

[quote="Captain Bizarre "]Add me to the list of dissatisfied customers. My last two auto-updates ended with some sort of error. Unfortunately, nothing looked immediately amiss, so I didn't bother to record the error. Some sort of breakpoint exception?

add me too

why not download it the old way (you know so we DONT have to relay on *** softwere not a good move) >:(

Because all patches that get posted on the site have to go through rigorous QA and get approved by the publishers if I'm not mstaken, whereas SDC updates are completely up to Brad and crew.

Unfortunately it happens every time I try to launch Central. I'm starting to think that the problem is with Stardock's server, it seems to have forgotten me, at least I think that's what is going on based on the program trying to open, and then it just closes. I was hoping they would have figured this out by now, I guess I'll just have to try and be patient. The update sounds very interesting, was looking forward to trying it out. Thanks for your interest guys,

Gary :(

Gary, this is a longshot but this is all I can find regarding crashes in their FAQ.

Troubleshooting

I click Discussions and Stardock Central crashes

This happens when there is an error in the information saved to the local discussions cache. To fis this, delete the contents of the Discussions folder, which you can find in the folder you installed Stardock Central (usually C:/Program Files/Stardock/SDCentral).
End of quote

Does anyone still have a copy of older SDC versions? An older version might work for Gary.

Aldar, seems like the above FAQ would have solved your problem.

I can update fine with Stardock, but not with the traditional patch, which I can't download. I'm trying to get back to version 1.05 so I can load an old saved game, but whenever I click on the link from http://www.galciv.com/download.asp, I usually get a 'The page cannot be displayed' error. Occasionally, I get through to a page that wants my CD Key and email address, but when I've finished typing all that in and pressed the button for the next page, I get another 'cannot be displayed' error.

Yeah, the 1.05 standalone patch download link seems to be broken again.

Will see if there are any SD folks in #stardock who can look at it when their office opens and if they work on Sat.

If you are having problems loading up SDC on startup, try deleting all files from within your Discussion directory at C:\Program Files\Stardock\SDCentral\Discussion

Then try reloading the program.

I've managed to download this now. I was even able to resubmit a masochistic game that came out anomalous before.

Thanks Ray and Bagginz, that worked. I thought uninstalling the program actually removed all files, but apparently not. I wish Stardock support would have suggested that, would have saved me days of time trying to figure this out.

I just logged on to SDC for the first time in over a month. After downloading the build 26 update, the program hung. After about 3 minutes, it came back with an error saying it couldn't "read the memory" at a specific location and closed.

I then reopened SDC and it seemed to be working fine, but I couldn't get the expansion pack to show (it was only showing me I was current, with version 1.05). I tried to Refresh Application Data, but still no luck. I then click on something like "get updates" and it seemed like SDC was downloading another update to itself. It then crashed.

Now, SDC won't load at all - every time, it gives me "sdcentral.exe has generated errors" and supposively genreates an error log.

also, I made sure my Discussions folder was empty (there was nothing there anyway), so that doesn;t help me. Any other thoughts?

Install SDC, and pull down the SDC from the link on the GalCiv home page... and let it update itself? Then re-register your game/drengin.net subscription number in it?

Just a wild thought on my part. Sounds like the SDC is in a wild state, and cannot handle things. Reinstalling should fix that. Uninstalling and deleting the SDC folders to make sure there isn't anything in there messing with the SDC just seems like it would make sure the reinstalling goes well.

But I'm just pulling that all out of the air... there might be an easier way to fix the SDC.

The latest version of SDC should now be ok. We found problems on systems not using WinXP so it should be happy now.
