Research?

Is it possible to make your enemies research go down? or lose tech permanently? so that if you want to stay a super power in the game and don't want any one to be making avatars or battleships etc, can you do something about that?

Other than bankrupting them so that they cant divert money to research, there's no way to prevent them from going all out on their tech.

Shane. It is not possible directly. But if you get a tech lead try selling some trade goods and techs say for $100 for as many months as you can. The aliens will usually start to go bankrupt in effect slowing their research down.

Also, I like taking away planets from each AI.... if you have substantially more systems, then the AI will research will lag and they'll bankrupt themselves constantly trying to replenish the military I destroy periodically for fun. In 24 games I'm played or am playing, an AI has only gotten to Dreadnoughts twice.

Keeping them bankrupt is the easy way. Just crank up your research like to 75% and 25% military and you will be able to bankrupt each one of them, including the minor races, also I try to increase the minor races revenue by once in a while giving them one of my planets that is spending too much money and then creating a trade route with them.
