I write thus I am

I love JU. It's like my diary. Except it's exposed to the internet. But i guess that's a choice. To share your writings is to share part of your life, your thoughts, your fears... and if you dont want the rest of the world to know about it, then dont write. Cuz even if you hide it or lock it somewhere a piece of paper will betray you one day.

I used to write a lot when i'd be angry at Darren: "he's a bastard, he treats me like shit, i hate him" stuff like that. And when we'd made up he would find the insignificant piece of trash under the bed when i'd be in the shower. I'd come out all ready and excited to go wherever we needed to go when i'd notice his sad expression and the sheet in his hands. *MERDE!!!*

But then again, i wonder if unconsiously i didnt mean for him to find it one day. For him to know the pain and anger he caused back then and to send him a hidden message: Look what you've done, never try again...

For some, writing lets them leave something to prosterity. I'm thinking about great authors. The ones i know are french: Proust, Rousseau, Voltaire, Dumas, Sartre.... There are too many to mention them all, and i confess i forgot more than half of them. But all in all, when they wrote it was to leave something for the future generations. A mark, to prove they were.

What would we do without writing? The world would be a mess, chaos, end of the world!! Okay i'm exaggerating, but so are the people who repeat a hearsay. When you repeat a story you've heard you somehow add your own sixpence, dont you? Of course you do. Thats why writing is so practical, it is unalterable, once its written its over, you can't change it. No wonder there are expressions like 'you cant write the future'. Without writing you dont have the security of a contract where all parties agree on something and once they sign they cant come back on it.

Without writing, how can we remember history?

Anyway, i guess i write because i want to meet people and i want to discover new opinions. I guess i write because when i find a person i agree with i feel less alone. I guess i write because well i just feel like typing on my keybord and ramble over anything and nothing like i am right now.

Heh i'm sure it doesnt make sense, does it? I write thus I am.

Same reason.

Writing isn't entirely flawless or set in stone in that aspect, it's still a matter of a point of view. Writers of history are assumed to be unbias, but they are probably bias.

A lot of old history books are really stories of the victors, not the defeated, we will never be sure if we get the complete picture. Caeser's campaign against the Celts - he says they perform human sacrifice, but many today are of the opinion that he was lying to justify his conquering of their people. In this age however, I think it would be harder to be one-sided about things with our modern day reporters swarming all over getting points of views from everywhere. We also have tools these days to discern whether or not a piece of historical or current report is telling truth or lies if we so wish to investigate.

And religious writing are often interpreted differently depending on who reads it, the intention of the writings it contains seem to be lost.

Ravenblack, thanks for the insightful and thanks for even stopping by!

aaah, i knew the 'history' part would get me into trouble because of the way things were written down before . But our ancesters writing down facts, stories or legends, i think it's pretty cool they did. Even if they beautified the truth or lied about it. At least we hear about them and if it doesnt make us dream then at least it makes us do some research. When Plato talked about Atlantis, was he talking about a fantastic place or a real one? You know what i mean? If there wasnt writings about Atlantis today, how could we even know about it?

I dont think i'm making myself clear... Hehe... What i'm saying is even if history was written in a certain way with a particular point of vue, thats what makes our patrimony. (If that makes sense)

As for the religious writings i agree 100% with you. But luckily they are written, imagine how worse it would be if the Bible was only 'told'

That's exactly why I blog.

Even if what is written is false, once it is out it doesn't go away so easily, which I think is what your trying to say. Spoken word changes over time, as it gets told and retold, but the written word can be pulled out and is exactly as it was originally written. And you write because you have an audience

Island, nice piece. I am a huge fan of the written word but am completely aware of how subjective the telling of a tale can be. As Ravenblack said,

Writing isn't entirely flawless or set in stone in that aspect, it's still a matter of a point of view

Memories are as subjective as the individual who retains them as are stories written down so passing on stories verbally can mean the story changes with each teller (a bit like Chinese whispers, I guess).

No wonder there are expressions like 'you cant write the future'.

I like to think that the future, to an extent, can be written. Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov, Robert Heinlein, Philip K Dick and Arthur C Clarke have all written stories in the past about futures filled with amazing technologies, advancements in medicine etc. At the time, none of these fantasy concepts were true, but some of them are now (radar, computers, nuclear technology etc). Is this a case of life imitating art or vice versa? Or is it just a freaky coincidence? I don't know, but I like to think todays fantasists could be planting seeds in the minds of scientists, giving rise to wonderful new inventions, technologies etc.

Cheers,

Maso

Maso thats what i think too.

As for the future i kind of think the scientist were inspired by science fiction: reality imitating art. I don't know, but I like to think todays fantasists could be planting seeds in the minds of scientists, giving rise to wonderful new inventions, technologies etc. Again i agree with you, its by the imagination of others (like inventors) that we progress. Why the imagination of a science fiction novelist wouldnt help scientists find a new piece of work?

Island,

further to this discussion, I actually also like my ideas to be challenged and discussed. I don't necessarily write for those out there who agree with me, but also to have my ideas challenged, which helps me learn and grow. Thanks again so much for this piece as it has really started me thinking. Please accept an insightful, you deserve it.

Cheers,

Maso

WOW Maso thanks for the insightful! I never thought anyone would find this interesting, i just got myself typing there and it flowed.

I like to discuss topics as well, but when i do find people that share my views and opinions i'm like haharr! i'm not so stupid. I know it's kind of egocentric, but when most of the people disagree with your views finding others that understand them is a huge relief...

I enjoy writing because it allows me to express myself. When I was young, I was really shy. Writing was the only way I felt like I could get out what I needed to say. I didn't know how to express myself verbally. Through writing, I learned how to.

Now, as a grown-up, writing is my future career (in public relations) and a way to earn money. However, it's more like an extension of myself instead of my whole self. Does that make sense?

Yes it does make sense dusk. I think i kinda was like you. When i was a teenager in love i couldnt get my feelings out of my throat and had to write everything down to my boyfriend cuz i was to shy to speak up

But now writing is just a way like another to communicate, but still one of my favourite ones when you think of the lasting of the written words...
