The Advent Wreath

I'm just interested how many of you out there have something to do with the advent wreath and your religion. I know as a Catholic, my religion uses an advent wreath. And if you don't know what it is, here's a brief history.

The origins of the Advent wreath are found in the folk practices of the pre-Christian Germanic peoples who, during the cold December darkness of Eastern Europe, gathered wreaths of evergreen and lighted fires as signs of hope in a coming spring and renewed light.

Christians kept these popular traditions alive, and by the 16th century Catholics and Protestants throughout Germany used these symbols to celebrate their Advent hope in Christ, the everlasting Light. From Germany the use of the Advent wreath spread to other parts of the Christian world.

Traditionally, the wreath is made of four candles in a circle of evergreens. Three candles are violet and the fourth is rose, but four white candles or four violet candles can also be used. Each day at home, the candles are lighted, perhaps before the evening meal-- one candle the first week, and then another each succeeding week until December 25th. A short prayer may accompany the lighting

We have an advent wreath at our house. What we do sounds about like what you stated was traditional, except you left out the bit about younger brothers fighting over who gets to light the candles and try to burn the house down in the process

we don't have advent at my church, either of them actually. It's not a pentacostal thing, we did at my old methodist church though.

Hehe!!! That's exactly what happens at my house! My two little brothers always fight over who gets to light the candle every Sunday. It's quite funny, except when they almost catch something on fire. Just curious Danny, what religion are you?

I'm christian, but if you mean denomination, well I don't actually go to church, so no idea. The rest of my family used to go to a presbyterian church, but recently switched to baptist.
