Get A Car B**CH!

So as I biked home in the cold weather last night (Thursday) I was crossing a bridge where the road narrows significantly. I was doing my best to stay as far away as possible but apparently it wasn't enough for a Silver Jetta, the driver of which honked at me and sped past. To my cheerful surprise he got stuck at the next stoplight and I was able to catch up to him. I approached the driver's side of the car and knocked on the window. He put the window down an inch and with an angry look on his face, "What?"

Me: "You got something to say to me?"

Him: "Yeah, why don't you get on the sidewalk."

Me: "Dude, you can't get up on that from there, give me a break huh?"

(As I'm riding away)...Him: "Why don't you give me a fucking break?"

I continue through the intersection as he passes I receive a fantastic rebuttal...

Him: "Get a car bitch!"

I've got one, I'm just not a complete asshole when I drive it, a concept that's obviously very foreign to you. And yes, I know I'm not completely innocent in this one...but I'm just an asshole when I bike, not when I drive.

Drivers should be nice to bikers, after all if they hit you, you go splat, not them.

In Germany the driving age is 18, so I rode my Puegot 10 speed the whole time!  Even when the temperature was minus god awful!  Through rain, snow and schmuck, I rode.  At times, the drivers would ride me off the road.  But I got even.  I stole their mercedes stars!  Hehehehehe

I thought your ID was Suspeck Ted, I guess that was a mis-assumption on my part, or he was just being an ID-ten-T in more ways than one.

I don't know what's going on on the roads these days. My friend told me she was rear-ended four times on the road by a guy who apparently thought she was driving too slow. Chill out, people! And let the bikers have their room. Sheesh.

Ooops! I meant she was in her car when she was rear ended! *sheepish grin*

Thank god!  I thought you meant he kicked her in the butt at Walmart! JK!

Nice grin too!

That sucks Suspeckted. I mean, you should get a car. What good is a bike anyway!?!? Let's all be excessive, drive around a two thousand pound of metal, instead of exercising and treating the environment well. Fuck it. Lets just drive in a forest that we burned a path through. As far as the driver of the car goes, can you say fucking genius. You should have thanked him for giving you the idea. Don't you feel dumb now. I mean, to think, the idea of driving a car never occured to you before. Geez, hop on your shit, go eat some chow mein, and puke a rainbow in the gutter behind a cheap sex shop. Thats just another good idea. Later.

Good start, you have potential!  Love your irony and sarcasm.  Keep it up. But leave out the nasty words.

BTW, I agree, so does my 12 speed now (but my kids have 15 speeds!

Absolutely Rat, I'll get right on that, I think I'll get a Hummer, or maybe two.

Huh?

Don't fret, I had my 21 speed turned into a single speed.

Thank god! I thought you meant he kicked her in the butt at Walmart! JK!

Ha Ha! I'm so tired about hearing about all of those Walmart butt kickings, it's epidemic!

You know, I just got my first car this year, and I'm happy about that because I didn't become one of those "I'm too good to walk" type of teenagers.

Walking (or riding a bike) was always good for the soul, not to mention the body, and I wouldn't trade anything for the days when I CHOSE to walk.

Besides that, he's gonna end up some fat old grouch whereas you will just be lovable Teddy Bear!

I have seen a lot of bikers hold up traffic.

It would be a good idea to put away the bikes in the wintertime, and ESPECIALLY leave them home when there's a snowstorm.  Bikes have no place on a snowy road.

Bikes have no place on a snowy road.

Neither do most drivers, but that does not stop them.  Besides, you wipe out on a bike, and you get skinned elbows.  you wipe out with a 2k-4k pound car, and you get a lot worse.

Jamie I can appreciate that you, like many other otherwise sane people have this view. But for those that don't own cars (or in my case, those who don't always choose to use them) we pay taxes for roads too, and they've got every right to use them 365 days a year. It's a risk I take when I get onto a road that might not be ideal for biking conditions, but as Dr. Guy was kind enough to point out, when conditions aren't ideal for biking they may not be ideal for driving either. All users of roads need to use caution and courtesy. I have no plans to venture out in a snowstorm on my bike. But in many situations that's someone's sole means of transportation and we need to respect that.

I have seen a lot of bikers hold up traffic.

I've seen an awful lot more drivers hold up traffic. If I'm one less car on the road, you should be thanking me. I'm leaving more parking spots open for you, creating less exhaust for us to breathe, and generally, causing less congestion. Bikers don't hold up traffic, they ARE traffic. I used to think like you, but once I decided to stick my neck out there and demand more respect for bikers (again, understanding that I didn't do this in the most mature way in this situation) my view changed quite quickly. 99% of drivers are very courteous, but it's that nasty ass 1% that can be dangerous to everyone...bikers and drivers.

but thank you for bringing up this view that I think many do share.

I think Jamie is just trying to stur up trouble.  There's no way such a nice guy would mean something like that.

Damn, i wish I had your quick ability! I would have them been able to point out the accidents that stop traffic completely, and last I saw in this area, none involved a Bicycle!  You are right! On all counts.

Why this animosity to bikers all of a sudden anyway?

Suspeckted, you have inspired me.  Not just by this article, this is just an appropriate place to mention it.

I'm getting a bike, and I'm starting to ride again.  I used to ride when i was a lot younger, great epic rides (for me anyway) of 20 miles and more.  I used to ride to and from work everyday (10 miles each way). Then I had kids and that all kind of went away.

The base that I live on now is pretty big, and the traffic can be horrible.  In an effort to provide an alternative, the powers-that-be have made the place pedestrian and cyclist friendly.  The weather here is much milder compared to where I used to live, meaning that the riding season is longer.  So....I'm adopting a no-drive policy if the distance I have to travel is under 5 miles.

And you're to blame   Seriously, I like that you ride everywhere, and it made me think about how much I drive and how unnecessary it is.

So...thanks.

This is one of the most flattering things an otherwise perfect stranger could tell me....this rocks! KUDOS! A lot of people have commended me on my biking committment, but it's usually followed by "You're crazy, I would never do that."

Wahoo!

Good, you deserve it.  I have thought a lot of your devotion to biking for a while now.

I'm actually pretty psyched about it myself!

Suspeckted is speading the word.

I've always hated driving by bicyclists. I'm worried when they try to bike during rush hour and it's slippery than shit out, and I hate the fact that most of them make incorrect lane changes, and ride the sidewalks.

But over the past year, the beauty of biking has been explained. I'm glad, because I cuss a lot less at those punks on bikes now.
Nic.

Ha Ha Ha...Bless you NickyG.

Sidenote: In most cities it's illegal to bike on the sidewalk.
