How can you manage a big empire?

In one game I am Playing I have about 25 to 30 planets (Abundant planets, huge galaxy). It is getting hard to prevent enemys from destroying my defenders, since I have alot of planets that are spaced out. My question is how can I manage a big empire and prevent the enemys from destroying my defenders.

Oh, and I am only making about 200 bc per month, which is barely enough to buy one frigat for a defender on each planet.

Hard to tell you without more info on what they are attacking with. You'll find a planet or two where there are choke points.

Do you have shields yet? Battleaxes defend better than defenders. Also try moving a frigate or two out and attack alien ships as they come in.

It sounds to me like your tax rate may be low and/or you haven't any trade.

what difficulty are you playing at? what year are you in your game? and what are you building for your social projects? we will need a lot more information to tell you where you are going wrong. you should be getting more then 200 BC if you have 30 planets (usually).

some pointers:

-put your taxes up around 50%
-trade with big AIs that you dont plan on starting a war with (atleast not anytime soon)
-dont build all of the social projects available! build the stuff that requires no maintenence (soil enhancements, banking centers, habitat improvements, economic exchange) on all of your planets. after that, build the stuff that improves your economy, but has small maintenence costs eg. stock market. after that, build what is needed.
-try not to lease stuff
-dont overdo with starbases -build as many as you can if its for harvesting resources however.
-how are the populations on your planets? to low of a population means less money coming from that planet. if you are invading a lot of planets, then you also are depleting your populations on your other planets. try to give your self some down-time inbetween planet invasions to allow the planets where you filled your transports with to recover a little.
-sell the techs you have researched to ALL of the AIs (they will sell tech among eachother, so mind as well sell to everyone)
-dont get carried away with ship building, if you arent in a war, build constructors and upgrade your current starbases. constructors require no maintenance, however each starbase requires 5BC maintenance -so its better to upgrade your current ones then build more starbase.
