"Dimebag" Darrell and Pantera You Have My Thanks

It may surprise many of you to know that I was raised on heavy metal. Thank God for heavy metal or it's likely I would still be recovering from heavy drugs. We can all say we had difficult times as adolescents, and as a result nearly all of us had something we could turn to for solice. Mine was the meanest, angriest metal I could get my hands on. Though I was a devout Anthrax fan, I also loved Pantera. I don't know how many times in junior high I would go to a party where someone had just put in Salt N' Peppa or the new Warren G and I'd quickly hit the eject button to throw in Vulgar Display of Power or Far Beyond Driven and headbang with the few others in attendance who appreciated my musical rebellion.

I'm taking an opportunity to point this out after I learned that Dimebag was killed last night on stage with his band Damage Plan when someone opened fire on him and then the crowd. Now I'm not here to discuss whether Dimebag Darrell was an upstanding citizen, because for all I know he had it coming for this guy to shoot him. But what I will say is that the music he, his brother Vinnie, and the rest of Pantera created got me through one of the most difficult times in my life, and that should be commended.

Now I've long parted from my Pantera CDs as well as the period of my life where I hated rap, but every now and then when I here "Walk" on 93X here in MN I get taken back to a time when metal was as vital to me as air.

Thank You,
Suspeckted

I posted an article about this earlier. It still freaks me out that some idiot got a gun into the venue in the first place.

I had the chance to meet him back in 1992, when Pantera was on the "Cowboys From Hell" tour. I smoked up with him and Phil Anselmo, and we chatted for a few. Truly a class act.

He will be missed.
