Happy Halloween, everyone!

Is anyone doing anything fun today?  Or, are you dressing up as anything?

I am taking my 6 year old daughter trick or treating tonight.  She's still not sure what she wants to be.  (I have put together 3 costumes so far).

My daughter was born 6 days before Halloween.  The first year we held her up next to a pumpkin to show how small she was.  Every year since then we have the tradition of taking a picture of her with her pumpkins.  It's neat to put them in order and see how she has grown!

[/quommmmmmmmm..Happy Halloween to everyone...though we do not celebrate this in Greece I always liked the spirit...so if I were there I 'd probably chose a vampire woman costume cause i trully trully love vampires......spooky??? i guess i have some vampire blood in me....so fly with me...after all i'm an angellllllll

Went on a hay-ride, wandered through a corn-maze (a maize ) and took my boys and some friends' kids trick-or-treating. I need to go back to work to get some rest.

traffic detail for the halloween parade that our fire department puts on every year, give out prizes to the kids. Really awesome fun with the kids. Took out my kids trick or treatin they enjoyed a full hour before we got poured on with rain. Also enjoyed the little six year old boy who came right in made himself to home at my house, his poor mom didn't know what to think, her son was quite the little chatterbox. Overall a great day. I hope too that all of you had a awesome time on this day.

Halloween is a weird thing.  I hear about people from other countries talking about it as an "American" thing.  Why it is "American" is because it's comprised of bits and pieces of different cultures in the US.

The day itself is "All Hallow's eve", which was named by the Catholic church.  But the date is actually of Celtic origins of their Samhain (Celtic New Year).  They believed on that day that the living and dead would intermingle, so they would extinguish the "flames" in their house, and dress up as ghouls so that they wouldn't be bothered.

"Trick or Treating" comes from a 9th century custom called "souling" where people went from door to door gathering a fruited bread from people who lost family members in the year.  They would then pray for each piece of bread that they received.

"Jack o' Lantern" comes from some Irish folklore about "Jack" tricking the devil into being trapped, then wandering around the Earth with an ember in a turnip (I don't remember the whole story).

So, though Americans celecrate it, the holiday has many beginnings, none of which are "original" to the US.
